The pop up flash does not work nor does the flash indicator appear on the view finder. but when I attach my external flash all is well. anybody have any ideas whats wrong?

This
will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the
little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent
down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera)
the small button which deactivates the pop-up
flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a
little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and
voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti,
the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch
and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a
service call.

I was having the same problem with my 350D --with the flash pop-up button now working while in "auto" mode, then discovered that the camera (is supposed to and does) controls the flash in (green box) auto mode while in "P" (Program) mode, you control the flash, if you press the flash button, it should pop-up.
I had the camera flash work once after this...i belive it thinks the flash is still attached. I think the temp solution was letting the camera sit 24 hours with no battery, too much a pain in the butt. The only other thing i did at that time was clean the connectors on the hotshoe. Also i have not tried it again to see if it was a fluke or not. It's interesting that we all have the same problem. Also there is no menu i could see to get the flash to come back on. If you manually get the flash to pop up(not easy, the button does not pop it up), it still does not flash. It would be interesting to see if anyone has a solution, or if i can recreate my success later when i have more time.
Same goes for my 350D. Seems a bit stange that at least two cameras would have the built in flash damaged after using an external flash. My feel is that my EOS still thinks the Speedlite is attached.
I just fix mine!! Today 26 December 2010, guys, I went and I held the camera with one hand and with my other hand (palm) I hit it twice (not too hard) on the flash area and then I pushed the flash buttom, as result the flash was released and now is working fine. Don't forget to to put it in P mode first.

I actually sent mine in for service with the pop-up flash problem (it was still under warranty). They had it back to me super fast! The service report stated: "It was found that the upper cover assembly was jammed the built-in strobe did not pop up. The upper cover assembly was cleaned."
Don't know if that's of any help - but if you are still under warranty (one year is standard) you may want to send it in at no charge (it only cost me about $6 to send it in, and that was with insurance via UPS). They also clean and inspect other things.
The flash tube or capacitor has blown I would think- Not a viable repair job even if parts are available- stick to the external.

My husband got me a new external flash and changed some setting I think. Now when the external is off the pop up flash won't come up. No errors show and I can't get it to pop up in the manual mode either. It still takes a picture, just with out the pop up flash. Carrying around the external will be quite the hassle for simple jobs. Please help!!!!
I, too, have the same problem. I've been using an external flash more frequently lately with the holidays. I've never had a problem going back in forth between the built-in flash and the external...until now. My thought, too, is that the camera somehow thinks the external is still attached. I'll be completely bummed if I don't figure this out as I take many pics with two little ones and don't always feel like having the bulk of the external - especially outdoors. I'll post again if I find a fix. Thanks to all who posted before me to let me know I'm not alone :oP
pop up flash does not work after using external flash also I do not have flash indicator light on.I did leave battery out for about 8-9 hours but this did not help. My camera is a Cannon xti about 1 year old
I am with all of you....same problem! My rebel Xti, after using the Speedlite 430II for the first time has not gone back to working with the normal flash...help help!
