I tried to replace agitator dogs yesterday evening, but when I removed the agitator (which is a single piece form plastic, not two pieces) I discovered no interior parts - - no dogs, no seal, nothing. The only thing turning this agitator is a large metal spindle coming up from the bottom of the wash tub. Are there supposed to be interior parts, i.e. dogs?, and did I get snookered? Or does this machine operate in some other fashion?
If this piece had 2 hoses attached and slides onto the motor, then it is the pump. you will need to replace it. Part # 3363394 available both new (27.99) and used (9.99) from timerking.com Hope this helps!

You most likely need to replace the dogs in the agitator, two piece agitator design. It should spin one way and catch the other on the teeth of the dogs. It will spin freely either way when the dogs are wore out. This is for the top half of the agitator, bottom is fitted to transmission shaft. You pop the top cover, remove the 7/16 bolt and both halves together to change dogs of agitator. Pull halves apart to change dogs. Fairly simple.
How to replace the dog kit in agitator To replace the dog kit in the agitator, remove the top cap/rinse dispenser and the inner bolt cover. Remove the 7/16" bolt and lift the agitator out of the washer. Separate the upper and lower pieces of the agitator and replace the dog kit inside the upper part of the agitator. Make sure the 4 pieces remain in place while putting the agitator back together.

Direct drive Whirlpool washing machines use a two piece agitator. In-between the two pieces there are cogs, sometimes referred to as "dogs," which will wear out. When the dogs start to wear, you will notice a clicking sound and the top agitator will not move as it should. When you learn how to replace the agitator dogs on a Whirlpool washing machine, you can have your Whirlpool working correctly again. Agitator dogs are available at appliance repair facilities.
* 1
Disconnect the Whirlpool washer from the wall outlet. Open the washer lid to access the agitator.
* 2
Insert a flathead screwdriver in the notch in the agitator cap. Twist the screwdriver to pop the agitator cap off of the agitator. If your model has an inner cap, remove the inner cap by pulling up on the handle and removing it from the agitator.
* 3
Use a socket wrench to remove the bolt in the center of the agitator. Most Whirlpool washers use a 7/16-inch bolt to secure the agitator.
* 4
Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands and pull it straight up out of the wash tub. Do not have your face directly over the agitator. If it is stuck or pops up too quickly you could injure yourself.
* 5
Set the agitator on the floor and carefully place your feet on each side of the agitator. Grasp the top of the agitator and pull the top half of the agitator off of the bottom half. Turn the top half over to access the dogs.
* 6
Use needle nose pliers to pull the dogs out of the agitator. Install the replacement dogs into the agitator according to the specifications given the manufacturer.
* 7
Set the top half of the agitator back on to the bottom half. Make sure to align the two tabs together between the halves so that they will friction fit. Grab the bottom of the agitator and apply a thin coat of dishwashing detergent on the rubber gasket on the bottom using your finger.
* 8
Set the agitator back into the wash tub and secure it using the retaining bolt. If your model had an inner cap, set the inner cap back into the agitator until it snaps into place.
* 9
Place the top of the agitator into place and press down until it locks into place.
.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap. 2.If the agitator is equipped with an inner cap with a handle, remove this as well by pulling straight up. 3.Remove the center bolt of the agitator. You will have either a 7/16" hex bolt or a recessed square plastic nut. If you have the square recessed type, use a 3/8" to ½" ratchet adapter to remove. 4.Remove the agitator by grasping the bottom flange and carefully pulling straight up. Try to keep all the parts assembled while doing this, so do not pull too hard. This will make this repair much easier. 5.Place your hand over the top of the agitator and separate the upper portion of the agitator from the lower portion and turn the top half over in your hand. The agitator dog assembly will come out in your hand. 6.With the agitator dog assembly in your hand, lay the rest of the agitator aside. Pay careful attention to how the dogs are installed. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. It's that simple. 7.With all the dogs replaced and the assembly still in your hand, place the upper part of the agitator over the top of it, upside down, ensuring the inner assembly tabs align correctly. 8.Now keep your hand over the agitator top to hold all the pieces together and turn the entire assembly over (upright position). 9.Carefully align and reinsert the upper portion of the agitator to the lower portion. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly. 10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. NOTE: DO NOT over tighten the nut, or the agitator will not spin correctly. Just make the nut snug. Reinstall center cap and inner cap (if equipped).
These instructions should give you the basics on how to perform this repair. Since there are various agitator types in use by Whirlpool and Kenmore, assembly can vary.

Had same problem with my washer. Check to see if there are little plastic tags holding top/bottom of agitator. after replacing dogs just ensure that you realign with tags so they do not break off.

The following advice is for replacing the "Agitator Dogs" on Kenmore and Whirlpool TOP LOADER style washing machines. This simple repair can save you a fortune in repair costs as the replacement parts are very inexpensive at a cost of less than $10. The replacement kit part number is 80040. You can order on line at various appliance parts websites, or use this part number and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer.
What are "Agitator Dogs"? These are small plastic pieces (usually 4) that are located under the agitator center cap that grip the agitator and turn it during the wash cycle. They can (and do) wear out dependent upon the use of the washer. If you are in the habit of doing large load sizes frequently, or wash large items such blankets or afghans, this can wear the teeth off and reduce the life of the agitator dogs.
SYMPTOMS REQURING REPLACEMENT: The agitator fails to turn during the wash cycle, or will not turn with a heavy load. The timer will run normally through all cycles, and you will be able to hear the gearcase (transmission) engage and run. The washer will also drain normally. The only indication that something is wrong will be the agitator slipping or not turning at all. The result will be clothes that do not wash properly and will sit on the bottom of the wash tub.
To replace the Agitator Dogs, follow these steps:
1.Remove the agitator center cap by either pulling straight up or gently placing a flat blade screwdriver into a slot located in the cap. Remove the worn dogs and reinstall new ones. Again, making sure the two pieces align correctly. 10.Place the entire agitator assembly back on the gearcase shaft and reinstall center nut. Replace agitator dogs, which should be available at your local appliance parts store for around $10. Replacement takes about 20 minutes (for a Whirlpool washer, at least.) Remove the center filter and you'll see a bolt (11 mm in the Whirlpool.) Remove the bolt, which you may be able to do with hand-turn socket wrench unless you have an extension for your ratchet. Removing the entire plastic agitator assembly is easy when tugging from below.
This next part may note be needed, but: Once you have the assembly out put it on the floor and stand on it. To remove the free moving part of the agitator, grab the fins and give it a good tug or two to free it from the lower assembly. It may take a bit of effort. Remove the inards, replace the four dogs, and reassemble.
It was *really* easy to do...and certainly a lot cheaper than having someone come out or, as we thought we were headed, to replace the washer.
