The lighter in my 2003 Mazda Protege does not work. I need to use the lighter to plug in my GPS. I suspect it is fuse related. The User Manual does not identify which fuse controls the lighter. The plug is always beneath the sump in every car and the filter in Mazda is on the side of the engine (am not sure in 1992 either in front or in the back).
Sounds like you blew a fuse in the main fuse box.
Or a solenoid that helps to activate them.
check your fuse panel and find where those items are located in the box and replace
