GE refrigerator / Freezer - Erratic freezing

After replacing all known parts to cause erratic freezing (heater, defrost timer, cold control + ice rotator motor ) and another service call for additional adjustment. I still have erratic freezing cycles. Last night the freezer was sweating, ice cream soft, ice in box frozen over (had to hit w/ tack hammer to get loose enough to put ice in glasses. This morning freezer was cold again.

SOURCE: Refrigerator and freezer not getting cold enough

I had this problem last year. I unplugged the the refrigerator and plugged it in an hour later it worked for a little while then quit over night. I finally called a sears repair they came 2 weeks later it was the motherboard, could have fixed it myself, what a hassle. Thankfully I have a fridge in the basement. Still this is a do it yourself.

SOURCE: FREEZER ICED OVER, LOWER COMPARTMENT NOT COOLING

Well, if the service person said the defroster is not the problem, there must be a good reason. But, I would go with a faulty defrosting system. Most likely suspects are the defrost timer and the defrost heating element.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Defrost not cycling

Hi. the Defrost timer assembly has failed. simply replacing this timer will fix the defrosting issue.

Concerning the refrigerators cold control. this is caused by a malfunctioning Temperature control assembly. simply replacing this device will fix the erratic cold control.

Now, i would inspect the compressor for its operational value before purchasing a temperature control assembly. If the compressor isn't cycling on and off and if it is making a very loud noise or pinging, this will confirm compressor failure. you will have to replace the compressor in this case.

If the compressor is coming on in a cycle and powering off without any abnormal noises, this will confirm temperature control failure. replace the temp control assembly in this case.

I will post the parts need below so that you may order the affected parts on line if you choose.

Temperature control assembly.
Defrost timer module.

Please rate and god bless:)

Freezing up

Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.
  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer/control board
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
