Keyboard won't work

    Yep, new batteries (and a second set just to make sure) and all connected properly. The keyboard is just dead!

Check the batteries and then see if the usb is properly fixed in the port, the green light should be on =)

I don't know of any company that sells the receiver separately. Your best bet is probably ebay. What you're looking for is "Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop Receiver 2.0A"

What indicatethree lights on microsoft receiver model 1028

I do not know if you got your answer yet, but the 3 lights on the reciever unit indicate the following:

light on the left (under the "A" indicates that your caps lock is on
light in the middle (under the "1" indicates that your numbers lock is on
light on the right (under the semi-circle with verticle hash mark) indicates the power is on

Can't install Microsoft Wireless Desktop

you need to resync the mouse and keyboard to the wireless receiver. you hold the button down on the receiver until you see a flashing light and then you press the button on the bottom of the key board. then you do the same thing for the mouse.
