I can see the display of the mode I am in, eg, auto etc., so it is working. The picture I am going to take is not showing up on the LCD screen at all.

unfortunately it would appear to be a CCD or main board failure.
If the camera is out of warranty (as this should be covered) my best suggestion is to pick up one off ebay with a broken screen and put your screen in it, broken screens are common on these cameras so they go quite cheaply, far cheaper than kodak would charge for repair and the swap is easy.
There are several searchs to try "parts v1003" "spares v1003" "Faulty v1003" "repair v1003"

your image sensor is bad it will have to be replaced by a camera technician .

I just replaced the LCD in my Kodak EasyShare753. I removed all of the screws that I could find, but still couldn't get the case apart. I finally found that the selector knob on the top of the camera has to be rotated to the SCN position. The lower part of the knob is slotted so that the camera case easily slides apart once the slot is pointing in the right direction.
