Barb, noise may be from a power supply/ transformer on it's way out.

Hi, I have a Samsung LN40A550 LCD TV which I have had for just over a year. ... I was watching TV yesterday and all of a sudden the picture went all. ... started makinga very high pitched buzzing sound with no picuture coming on. sounds like the projection bulb went bad. change the bulb and it should work. sometimes they make a high pitch noise when they are trying to turn on. the bulbs seem to last about 2 years for me.

Sounds like a blow fuse for sure. Very cheap and easy solution.
Unplug it, open it up and look for any blown fuses (they're usually transparent cylinders). You'll know if they're "blown" if there is no wire going all the way across it inside the cylinder. If you find one, take it to Radio Shack, and they'll get you a replacement.

Rarely picture tube also shows the same symptom. High pitch sound is due to through deflection area LOT power supply is loaded. Compulsary horizontal output transister short. From your statement i think Lot puncture takes place. Change LOT and horizontal output transister and check tv is now working.

what you are hearing is the mechanical vibrating of coils & or transformers in the tv. 1st and easyest is to hot glue the parts that is making the noise down. if that does not work, removing & reinstalling the part is next. the last is replacement. the most likely parts causing is the 1. horizontal linearity coil, 2. the run or switch mode transformer, or 3. the flyback transformer. good luck.
