The unit is in the basement is humming. We did shut the unit off and turned it back on the humming and flame reaapearred in 15 minutes or so. There is also a smell coming from the vents.
Sounds like the circulating fan on your furnace is not running. This will cause the furnace to shut down due to overheating, and you can smell the overheating as well. You will probably have to press a reset button on the burner to clear the overheat shutdown. Check the fan belt if there is one. If no belt you have an integral motor. Remove all power from the system and make sure the fan spins freely. If it doesn't, try to work some oil into the bearings. These things always fail on a holiday, but if you can't get the fan spinning you're going to have to call in a HVAC specialist.
