After studying the site here I have carefully removed the power supply board but am unsure of where to go from here as everything looks pretty clean, the caps look unburnt although there is a lot of rubbery gung around them (I think it is just a messy job of the insulation) and I can see imagery behind the black screen if I use a flashlight, Help please i am pretty stuck? Thanking you if you can.

zolio, Monitor most likely has "switch-mode-power-supply" problem!! click on blue highlighted "SyncMaster 740N" and read about similar BLACK SCREEN of DEATH failures and how to fix them!! Your monitor I suspect is no different than any other LCD with "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamps" for backilghting that fail to light-up. You can even visit YOUTUBE for videos on fixing BSOD problems!! Also a ton of stuff here on FIXYA!!! Just read and follow some of the links!! you WILL find out about everything you DIDN'T know of HOW and WHY lcd monitors fail. And better still, LEARN how to do the repair work or contract out the work to a Technician or other monitor REFURBISHMENT depot. Have you tried SAMSUNG to do warranty work? If this response was of some help please rate on FIXYA . 12fixlouie

I have just had this same problem. The problem mostlikely is a blown fuse on the inverter board. Mine was blown on the board and also a Capacitor (470nF/25V) was bad beside the Fuse.
I replaced both and monitor is working now again. After install the picture was a little grainy with little artifacts. In another post i found that the Power Supply board needs to be cleaned for unwanted residue. After that picture was fine again.
BEWARE that you need a soldering iron and a steady hand to replace these parts. If you are unfamiliar with soldering at all have an expert take a look at this. The Power boards uses 220v so DO NOT connect it to the Power when opened.

Use good caps with LOW ESR, you can also have bad lamps which will also cause the inverter circuits to go into shutdown to protect itself. You need test lamps to test that. You may have to check the power supply DC outputs, Inverter circuits for bad transistors, transformers, etc.

Thanks for your kindness friends, I will carry on reading on here and see how far I can get. I will not be able to do any soldering as my hands are very unsteady but I feel that I can manage to replace the power board with a new one if it comes to it that I need one. I cannot as Samsung about warranty as I bought the monitor off ebay last year. I have just been looking at your board my friend and it looks different to mine in a couple of areas please take a look at my picture if you would as I am now thinking that the seller I bought it from off ebay may have replaced the board at some time maybe although I feel that I done pretty well to get the year out of it so farHeres what mine looks like...
