E4 is a fault code not an error message. It means there's something wrong with the device. You need to take it to be serviced.

Disconnect from PC.
Reconnect DVR to TV after a minute. Does it record? It will initialize etc before recording.

If it do not detect the HD, there is no other way to back up.

Change the hdd or remove it then connect it to PC and do for it format , it will work .

Sounds like you may need to replace the hdd in this unit

Try inserting your DVD media into the PC and doing a 'quick format'. The LG is not seeing what it considers to be media that it can use. It is not seeing that you have inserted recordable media. Sometimes you can reformat the DVD or do a quick media erase, and the LG can then put on its blank "squares" that is uses for its menu selection. I think that it what it does when it 'initializes' a new media.

Greeting, I have same problem too, and now recorder is in warranty service. HDD sucks. This recorder is piece of ****. HHD is noisy and poor quality.
