You need to download and run the HP Scan Diagnostic Utility.
In theory, you click the link below. In practice you might have to cut and past the link into your browser address:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=oj-45265-1&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en

There are about fifty things that can go wrong with HP all-in-one units. Jack of all trades and master of none. If this doesn't help, write back with the exact error message you get; also how you tried to initiate the scan. B.T.W. I'm only 60, still learning too.

How to use my hp photosmart C5280 All in One scanner unsing mac leopard

When you install the Full Feature software for your printer, you receive the HP Photosmart Studio imaging software and the HP Utility printer management software. You can use either of these programs to scan, and can create custom settings in both.

In general, use HP Photosmart Studio to scan pictures if you want to edit them to adjust color, crop, remove red eye, etc. Use HP Utility to set up scan tasks you use often, such as scanning to a certain folder or software application, or attaching the scanned item to an email. If your printer has a display, you also use HP Utility to designate which scan tasks should appear on the printer display menu when you start a scan from the controls on the printer.

Make sure that the printer is connected to the computer. Turn it on. Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass.

Use HP Photosmart Studio to start a scan: Click the HP Photosmart Studio icon in the Dock. Click the Scan button. Select your HP product in the Device Name list, if necessary, and then click Continue. From the Scan Profiles screen, click either Pictures or Documents. Click Profile Settings , and then adjust any settings in the Capture , Adjust , and Page Options (for documents) or Enhance (for pictures) tabs as appropriate. Click Scan. When prompted, select Yes or No to add another page to the scan. The scan preview opens then click Return to close the preview and save the scan. Type a name for the scan in the Save As box. Click the Format drop-down list, select the file format you want, and then click Save.

When i try to scan a picture, the hp software opens but then a error box come up saying "an error occurred communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure the scanning device is connected properly...

Try turning the printer off for 60 secounds and see if the reboot will solve the problem. Do make sure all cables are connected properly so your computer will be able to load the correct drivers at start up of the printer.

Where to plug in phone port for the HP c5280

Hello,

I'm sorry but the C5200 series printers do not have a phone port. It is not a Fax capable printer. It scans, copies, prints and does photo prints.

The only ports you have are for the USB cable and power cord.

Here is a manual link for reference.

HP C5200 Manual

Thanks for using Fixya.

Scan an original to a computer
You can scan originals placed on the glass by using the control panel.
