Have you got any other remotes in the room that could be faulty or interfering with the WDTV.
Also:
try resetting via the side button with the unit on.
resetting to factory defaults via the internet menu.
unplugging the unit from power for some minutes (not seconds).
Do all the above one after the other before using the WDTV.
Sometimes this helps particularity after a firmware update.

Snake. As it turns out, the cicuitry was ok. The problem was in the manual control panel. One or more of the buttons was "stuck", virtually freezing out any other incoming signal. Now the buttons didn't "feel" stuck but the interface viewed one or more of the buttons in the engaged position. The solution was to have all the manual control panel buttons checked. The problem stumped the more junior tech that came out...but his boss had seen this problem before with the Mitsubishi Diamond Series.
I have a 36" Sony Trinitron. Sequential numbers continue to scoll indefinitely in the upper right-hand corner and the manual (Menu, Channel, Display) and remote buttons no longer funtion. Volume is only accessible manually, but all manual buttons have the impact of advancing the channel by one.
The television is hooked up to TIVO and once the television is on channel 3, all non-remote television operations can be completed without problem through the TIVO remote. Volume and Power are the 2 remote functions that continue to be impaired.
