SOURCE: Blank screen on Panasonic Camera
I had the same problem. So I figured I'd take it apart and see what was loose. I removed all the screws around the outside and pulled the back cover off. There is a ribbon connector at the top with a locking cover. The cover was unlocked. I re-seated the ribbon connector and closed the lock and it works now. Let me know if you need more details.

Thanks for that link, I will keep it handy! Be careful however, because the exact same symptom can be caused by a stuck shutter. To tell if it is a stuck shutter follow these steps: 1. Turn off the flash!! 2. Look down into the lens. 3. Take a picture. Did you see anything change? The opening at the center should be momentarily covered by a matte black shield. If you take a picture and see no change inside the lens then the shutter is stuck closed or open. If Canon finds your shutter to be stuck and not a CCD failure, the repair will not be free.. very not free. David Millier Advance Camera Repair

I had the same problem with my CoolPix5400 and this resolved the issue.
