I have built in yamaha DS-XG audio system in my toshiba tecra 8200 laptop. It had no problem. I used a headset to make international calls without any problem. I used external pc speakers and played songs on you-tube. Its microphone developed a hissing sound all the time when I run my hand above microphone hole above speaker. I do not know why there is this hissing sound. when I try to make a call, I hear my self speaking and the microphone on computers picks every sound from room. Please what can I do to solve this problem so as to use both headset and built in audio system without hissing sound
That sounds alot like the microphone booster in control panel. Depending on what version of windows your are using, you can just open the sound control from the taskbar and go to the advanced settings and uncheck the setting "microphone booster". Adjust microhpone volume accordingly.
Oh, what you are referring to is called "feedback." It happens when you have your microphone placed to close to your speakers, it actually picks up the residual noise from the speakers and amplifies it. I still however believe it to be due to microphone boost.
I too am using Windows XP Professional, so here are the directions to find microphone boost.
1)Open your sound control by clicking here
2)It will bring up sound manager
3)Go to the options pulldown and select Advanced
4)It will bring up the advanced buttons on the sound manager like this, my microphone happens to be "Rear Pink Input", but most likely yours is just "Microphone", Click the Advanced button
5)uncheck "microphone boost" from the checkbox, like this
To this
And your done. If you still have the noise turn the volume on your microphone down until it disappears.

I am using Microsoft Windows XP prfessional version 2002 (intel pentium III). I cannot see the option that you indicated. problem persisting and behaving as if microphone and speakers are merge. the hissing sound could deafen someone's ears
Please, thanks for the precision in your solution. Unfortunately, the Advanced control option is not highlighted (blurred) on my computer and does not give any further options on clicking. I do not know why it cannot be highlighted or it appears blurred. Could your please give me any further advice to have it highlighted. Also, I took the headset out of the room and the hissing sound persist on increasing volume control knob. may other problem may be involved.
Please the microphone on the laptop is a small hole above the microphone and hissing sound persists even when headset is disconnected from laptop
