I have windows 7 and when i go into defragment my drives. in the drive options where i have my 2T goflex portable hard drive, my computer says to never defragment. so my question is, can i really not...

There are manufacturer specific defrag programs. Also SSD have a limited number of R/W cycles and when they fail, there is NO warning. A defrag is a very intensive R/W process. You don't want to waste cycles on something that fast.

Speeding up a computer by Defragmenting Hard Drive

Is your computer running slow? Have you tried running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software to speed it up, but to no avail?

Perhaps cleaning up your hard drive could help. This tip will explain, in step by step instructions, how to defragment your hard drive.

To Defragment your hard drive:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Tools" tab at the top.
5) Click "Defragment now..." in the middle of the window.
6) In the window that pops up click "Defragment disk"
Defragmenting your disk physically moves files that are similar or
fragmented into an area that will more efficiently use your space.
5) The Disk Defragmentor will analyze your hard disk.
6) After analyzing it will move and defragment the information appropriately.
Disk Defragmentation is complete. You should see noticable improvements in your computer's speed and preformance.

How to defragment my computer focomputer efficiency

Click on start, then computer (or just My Computer from the desktop). Right click on the C: drive and then click on the tools tab. You will see defragment listed there. Click on it. Please make sure you have your screen saver disabled and are not running any other items while you defrag. If you are the defrag will fail.Alternatively you can download smart defrag 2. Just do a search for it on the internet and you should find the download. This is a much more stable and effective program than the windows defrager.
Good luck and I hope this helps

How can I defrag my Dell optiplex760?

How to Defrag a Dell Computer
1. Open the My Computer window. To do this on a Dell computer, click on the "Start" button at the bottom of the screen. Then, click "My Computer".
2. Choose the hard disk drive that you want to defrag. Locate the section entitled "Hard Disk Drives." In this section is a list of hard drives on the computer. For most Dell computers, the hard disk drive you will want to defrag is Local Disk (C:).
3. Right-click on the hard disk drive you want to defrag on the Dell computer. If you want to defrag your C: drive, then right-click on "Local Disk (C:)". A menu bar will appear.
4. Click on "Properties." "Properties" is the last option on the menu bar. This opens the Local Disk (C:) Properties window.
5. Click the "Tools" tab. The Tools tab is the second tab in the Local Disk (C:) Properties window. The tabs are located on the top of the window.
6. Click the "Defragment Now" button. The "Defragment Now" button is in the Defragmentation section of the window. This opens the Disk Defragmenter window.
7. Click to select the disk drive you want to defrag on a Dell computer and then click "Defragment." For most Dell computers, this will be (C:). After you click "Defragment," the Dell computer will first analyze the disk drive you selected and then beginning defragging the Dell computer.
8. Wait for the "Defragmentation is Complete" message. If you have not defragged a Dell computer in a long time, then the defragging process might take a while, even as long as an hour for very fragmented Dell computers. Allow the Dell computer to run the defrag until the process is completed. You will know that the Dell computer has completed the defrag process when the "Defragmentation is Complete" message appears.
9. View the defrag report and then close the window. If you want to view the defrag report, click "View Report." Otherwise, click "Close" to close the window.

If the defrag is running slow and/or runs along time but does seem like finishing look at how much free space you have. If you have less than 15% free space this will not allow you to get a good defrag of the system. You might try moving some files to another drive while you do the defrag. Also try uninstalling some programs this can help too. Then after you get the system defraged then you can put the files back and reinstall your programs.
