SOURCE: Our Color TV is now Black & White

It could be the color wheel and in fact probably is. I've seen them shatter which would explain the noise. They are glass and spinn at 9000 rpm. An involved repair though definatley a job for a pro. It could be worse, probably a few hundred will do it. Was the TV begining to be a little loud before the failure? Could be a sign, i've seen many noisy color wheels.

SOURCE: My Samsung HLN5065W turns itself off after about

This is a DLP projection that has a ballast and color wheel along with a lamp. The three flashing lights on the front are a diagnostic code. The exact meaning is listed in the owner's manual under troubleshooting. I don't have the manual for your model with me at the moment, so I can't look it up. Since the unit works OK for a while, it suggests that a component is failing under heat stress. This is often the ballast. The ballast is the part that provides the power for the lamp similar to the ballast in a flourescent light. Check the manual for the code and post it here. Also, because your model uses 2 different ballast/lamp combinations, you will need to get the lamp number off of the lamp. Please post that here too.

In the meantime, check the rear area for any obstruction in the air flow. There should be a fan in the rear that needs to be clear of debris and can turn freely. With the set unplugged, try turning hte fan by hand. It should turn easily and continue on its own slowing down to a stop. If it stops suddenly, the fan may be defective and not moving enough air to keep the lamp cool.

Keep us posted.

Color wheel is going or gone out. New colorwheels are air bearing and not mechanical.

My Samsung HLN5065W started to freeze to a black and white

I have a problem with my HLN 5065W Samsung DLP that 3 other folks have and no solution. After the set is on from 5 minutes to 6 hours, the screen will freeze in black and white, I can turn it off for 5 minutes and it will display a good picture again. Sometimes the screen will just go dark blue, TV has to be cycled on/off to get the display back. This problem is getting worse, started as once a month, now 3-5 times a day. I have a tech background and can read a schematic, HELP.

Noise from Samsung rear projection DLP HD TV.

this noise is an indication of a bad color wheel. aa dlp uses a mechanical motor to spin a coloered segment disk. this turn the white light of the lamp into your colors of pictures. Now anything that moves will eventally break. the flickering is also an indication of a color wheel going bad. eventally this will cause the set to shut down. Color wheels can be replaced. i dont know your model so i am not sure of the exact replacement procedure. at my shop we charge average 250 for such a repair
