3840 is an old scanner and the latest driver for it in microtek website is for xp. but you can try using the win7 64-bit driver of ArtixScan DI 1210 which you can download here:

after downloading, DON'T INSTALL it. put it in a folder, then using your WINRAR, extract it (right-click then click Extract Here). Then MANUALLY UPDATE your driver by browsing to your folder when windows detect your printer or click add printer in Devices and Printers in Control Panel.
When you say -'normal' prescan
you do mean you get an image?
If this is so I would remove all software.
Do a disc clean
Reboot the computer
Re install the original supplied software-ignore for the time being any down loaded upgrade,

CCD failing or processor fault
If you can correct the faults in an image editor then thats OK do that.
