thanks for the advice. I replaced the rechargables with new disposables and the camera worked fine. I have since replaced the rechargables and they work OK too.

First make sure you are using fresh lithium batteries. These cameras indicate low batteries quite early on. Rechargeables even when freshly charged are marginal.

If the problem persists remove the batteries. Set the camera switch to the off position. Set the focus switch to manual. Wait at least a minute. Then replace the batteries and switch on again.

Operating with low batteries can confuse the firmware and it may be stuck in a low-battery loop. If this is the case this should reset the camera by allowing the electronics to power-down completely.

If this does not work you wiil have to contact pentax support.

Also some NiMh batteries have an odd discharge curve. (The way the voltage changes as the battery discharges.) They start quite high and rapidly drop to close to the nominal value, they then dip slightly lower for a while, and bounce back before falling again.

New technology niMh, with low self discharge rates (Eneloop etc.) can show a marked dip in the discharge curve. So a battery which has only been used a little, can drop below the minimum set point for these cameras, and then after a while recover.

The voltage is also dependent on temperaure, so if your camera signals low voltage unexpectedly early in cold weather, take them out and put them in a pocket for a minute to warm them a little. This should allow them to get past the dip.

Why isn't my K100D Flash not working?

Hi,

please ensure that you've not used the camera for more than the advised amount of time by the manufacturer. Also, you can attempt to use the same brand/type of batteries as was including with your camera when you got it. Some manufacturers put internal fimware/software restrictions on their devices. For printers, this would be done for cartridges and in the case of your camera, it would be for batteries.

Lastly, I would check that your sd card isn't full before calling Pentax to refer you to a repair shop.

Thank you.

New Pentax K100D Super, shutter does not work. Av -- flashing 688 under battery sign. Replaced new batteries did not resolve problem

I suspect dirty contacts on either lens or body. Clean contacts. Should alleviate problem. This happened to my K100d.

Won't turn on even with new batteries

Clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

Display option

Pentax K100D does not have Live View function. So you can't preview the image before taking the image.

LCD screen flashing

Hi!
This is a feature and not a defect of the K100D. You can turn this off by going to the menu and going into the second tab (playback menu). Once there, go to preview display, where you will have 3 options - off, histogram and brighten areas. Set this to off (your camera is set to brighten areas, that is why the white parts of your photos appear to be blinking).
Hope this helps!

Pentax K100 problem

Might be temporary lack of communication between lens and body - try cleaning the contacts on both gently with a lint-free cloth and a very little IPA.

K100D flash doesn´t work

My camera with the dodgy flash is holidaying in Japan as they sent it to be fixed - not sure how old your camera is but I am trying to see if this is an issue that occurs with the camera model.... given that there are only two of us to date I am thinking that we may have just struck the jackpot :(
