SOURCE: where is the lid close swith located when looking directly at the hp pavilion laptop dv2000?

Not sure on that model but if it has a visible switch it's near to or underneath the hinges, the right one usually.

HP Pavilion DV2000 will not start when power button pressed

    Could be a bad;
    1) AC adapter (Charger),
    Or
    2) DC Power Jack, (Jack that the AC adapter plugs into on the laptop),
    Or
    3) Power On switch, (Power Button Board),
    Or
    4) Display Lid Switch Module,
    Or
    5) Power MOSFETs on the motherboard,
    Or
    6) Ceramic Capacitors on the motherboard.

    1) AC adapter:
    General example,

    http://www.amazon.com/Original-HP-65W-Adapter-Pavilion/dp/B002QCUIZC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1350152535&sr=8-6&keywords=ac+adapter+hp+dv2000

The plug end that plugs into the laptop has a Center Hole, and a cylindrical metal outside shell.
The center hole is the Positive connection.
The cylindrical metal shell on the outside is the Negative connection.

Multimeter function knob set to DC Voltage, the Positive (Red) probe lead goes to the Center Hole.
The Negative (Black) probe lead touches the cylindrical metal shell.

[An inexpensive multimeter can be purchased for as little as $5 to $12. Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example, or look on the checkout aisle racks of major discount stores.
If just a symbol, the symbol for DC Voltage is a dotted line over a solid line. More expensive multimeters have an auto detect feature, that sense when the multimeter is connected to AC voltage, or DC voltage )

You should read 18.5 Volts (DC)

While testing have an assistant gently wiggle the cable from AC adapter to laptop, and the power cord to the AC adapter. A fluctuation of the reading indicates there are broken wires.

    AC adapter checks out OK?
Go to the DC Power Jack.

The DC Power Jack on the laptop may have DC_IN next to it.
It has a Center Pin, and surrounding metal shell.
Battery REMOVED, use a No.2 pencil, and see with the easer if you can move the center pin.

If so the jack needs to be replaced.

The DC Power Jack for this model series is attached to wires, that end in a small white plug.
The small white plug plugs into the motherboard.
Easier to replace, than models that have the DC Power jack soldered directly, to the motherboard.
It's a DC Power Harness, and HP labels it a Power Connector Cable.

HP 430462-001 for models that have a UMA motherboard.
HP 430461-001 for models using an Intel processor.

DC Power Jack checks out OK?

In the list click on -
HP Pavilion dv2000 Notebook PC Maintenance and Service Guide

This is a PDF file. The computer you are using now has Adobe Reader on it, which uses PDF files.
After you click on the above file name, it may take up to 30 seconds before the first page comes up.

The PDF reader page numbers, and the actual manual page numbers, do not match. When I refer to a page it is the PDF file page.
Go to Page 141 - Switch Cover
Pages 142 and 144 have more details on the Power Button Board.
(Power Button Board is HP part number 417084-001)

    How to test?
Multimeter set to OHM. Straight pins (2) in the socket holes of the removed, Power Button Board's cable connector.
Positive probe lead to one pin, Negative probe lead to the other straight pin.
    Press the Power On button.

ANY reading indicates a good Power On switch.
No reading of course means a bad one.
(Remember; the Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch.
You will just get a brief reading on the multimeter, if good)

Or you can use a small flat tip Jewelers screwdriver, and TEMPORARILY touch the two contact pins on the motherboard, where the Power Button Board's cable plugs into.

Page 179 for the Display Switch Lid Module,
    (HP 417087-001)

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/HP,Laptop,Part,417087001.aspx

Unplugging the Display Switch Lid Module from the motherboard, and pressing the Power On button, starts the laptop, you need a new lid module.

Power Button Board, (Power On switch), and Display Switch Lid Module checks OK?

    Motherboard problems.
There are Power MOSFETs on the motherboard. These are located close to where the plug of the Power Connector Cable, plugs into the motherboard. (DC Power Harness)

    The Power MOSFETs control;
Whether the Battery needs a full charge, or a trickle charge.
Whether the laptop is to just run off of the AC adapter, or Battery.

Look to see if any are blackened, burned, or blistered.

Just to show the average cost of a Fairchild Semiconductor - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET,

    http://www.mouser.com/Search/Refine.aspx?Keyword=FDS6679

One dollar and one penny USD.

Looking at the second photo down on the Mayohardware blog link, look at AO4407.
    (Alpha and Omega Semiconductor)

Look to the right of the Yellow circled AO4407. That small rectangular shaped object, with a dark wide band on it, is a Ceramic Capacitor.
There is one above it of the same size, one above that, and one to the right of the top one.

Average cost of them is around 62 cents to 80 cents.

Average cost of a replacement motherboard is around $40 to $60 on Ebay.

That does it for me right now. Post additional questions in a Comment.

Where do we find the display lid switch for a HP Pavilion dv9715nr ? we replaced a damaged hinge on this laptop first and now we cannot get a display.

Let me guess. Damaged Left hinge?

HP had a recall for this problem, but the recall has lapsed as of May 31, 2009.

    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&docname=c01611512

The Pavilion dv9000 series, also has a problem with the graphics chip overheating, and burning up.

Yes, I know. Just a regular ray of sunshine.

    Graphics chip:
    1) Chip is a slang term for I.C.
    Integrated Circuit.

    2) A graphics chip is a GPU. Graphics Processing Unit.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GPU

The HP Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's use Integrated Graphics, as commonly do a very large percentage of notebook PC's.
The GPU is mounted, { Soldered }, directly to the motherboard.

{Another term for Integrated Graphics is OnBoard Graphics.
    On the motherBoard}

The GPU is an Nvidia GeForce 8600M GS, that uses the PCI Express technology.

The cooling system of this laptop (Notebook) has a poor cooling design for the GPU.

This causes the GPU to overheat, and burn up.
There is no just replacing the GPU. The fix is to replace the entire motherboard.

I would like to suggest a simple test to see if the GPU is bad first., before going on to replacing the Lid Switch Module.

Hopefully it is just the Lid Switch Module, or perhaps another simple problem I will detail. My thoughts at present, are that it is another small problem.

The test requires plugging in a VGA monitor to the back of the laptop, and seeing if the graphics are good.
(CRT monitor. Looks like a small television set)
Do you have access to a VGA monitor?

    [ Bypassing the Lid Switch Module requires removing these components to access it;
    1) Battery
    2) Harddrive
    3) Optical Drive
    4) Switch Cover
    5) Keyboard
    6) Speaker Assembly
    7) Display Assembly
    8) Top Cover
    9) Top Cover Trim ]

On the Left side of the laptop is a VGA port, to connect the VGA monitor to.
    (Example of a VGA port:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VGA_connector

Coming from the back of the laptop on the Left side, it is the second port.

VGA monitor plugged into laptop, power on.
Hold the fn key down, tap the F4 key.
Give the VGA monitor time to, 'Come to life'.

    VGA monitor comes on?

GPU is good, time to go on with the diagnoses.

The Display Cable also routes through the Left Hinge.
This cable has the graphics signal cable, and the power cable for the LCD Display.

(The Microphone Cable also routes through the Left Hinge)

This cable is very small, and could have easily been pinched, which could cause breakage of the tiny copper wires, inside the insulation sheath of the cable.

If it is pinched, this MAY be visible by observing the plastic insulation of that cable. The cable does get slightly squished with normal usage, though.

With the Left Hinge being loose, and is hard to open anyway, the cable could have become stretched.

This would cause breakage of the tiny copper wires inside, and the outside damage to the insulation of the wire, may not be so readily apparent.

It could also be that the connector that plugs into the motherboard, has simply been pulled loose, or is not tightly plugged in, and is not making a good contact.

I will include the link to the Service Manual from HP Support, in an additional comment.

I do suggest you buy, and wear an inexpensive ESD wrist s-trap, and connect the alligator clip to a good ground source.
    (Average cost is around $6)

Continuity test indicates the Display Cable is okay?

( The Display Cable disconnects from the motherboard, and from the Inverter, that is located in the Display Assembly.

The Inverter is what converts power for the LCD display screen, and also the Backlight Lamp.
The Inverter is a small circuit board, located behind the Display Bezel of the Display Assembly.

Cable disconnected from the motherboard, and from the Inverter, a continuity test of the Display Cable is done with a multimeter.

The multimeter is set to the 1K, or 10K scale.
An economical, but decent enough multimeter for this type of testing, can be purchased for around $12 to $15, from a local auto parts store )

Okay, now it's time to replace the Lid Switch Module.

I will give the link to HP Support, and the Service Manual for the Pavilion dv9500, dv9600, and dv9700 series, in an additional comment so you can disassemble the laptop to access the above.
