HP DesignJet 330 - plot from AutoCAD - page size problem
From AutoCAD Map 3D 2006, I have created a viewport that uses a 24"x18" Landscape paper size for my Page Setup for plotting to our HP 330 onto a roll of 24" wide mylar.
The important specification is that the plot must be contained in a rectangle whose exterior dimensions are 22"x16", so that there is a 1" boundary all the way around the 22"x16". This is easier said than done.
In order to work out the page setup, I have worked out the plotting parameters on a roll of plain paper, which saves the expensive mylar.
By trial and error, I hit upon a page setup that does what I desired. The leading edge and the 2 side edges have exactly 1" wide clear boundary. Now comes the trailing edge: the peculiar quality of the 330 is that, once the plot is finished, the machine advances the media so that, when it comes to a rest, I would like the cutter blade to be positioned to cut and leave a trailing edge of exact 1." I worked that out on the paper roll.
Now, my problem: when I load the mylar roll, I get only a 1/2" buffer on the trailing edge, all other things coming out correctly. That is, the machine does not advance the media as far as it did when the paper roll was loaded. I have been careful to select "film" for the mylar and "plain" for the paper. All other things remain the same: same page setup, same plot information, etc. To me, this makes no sense whatsoever. I have tried my level best to control all the factors and introduce only one change, namely, the substitution of the mylar roll for the paper one.
I am at my wits end. I would appreciate your assistance.
Thank you.

Set at paper and loading film will cause too much ink to be laid down too quickly for it to dry correctly.
As for a solution, about all that be done would be a work around. When done printing and advancing the 1/2", lower the paper lever and pull it forward 1/2". Not at all what you are looking for, I would think.

Try resetting the printer properties to default and retry. Or else try reinstalling the driver software and change the settings therein.
Hope that helps!

Hi, thanks for your answer. The plotter is connected via parrallel by a very long cable (33 feet) so I think that's my problem.
Since then, by the way, I didn't had the problem anymore and the plotter works perfect. If the problem starts again, I will use a much shorter cable.
You need to lubricate the shaft that the carrage runs on. If you dont have the correct lubricant, use sewing machine oil. Switch the machine off and using a cleaning fluid such as methelated spirits or benzine, carefully clean the shaft. Take care not to damage the encoder strip (plastic strip running just above the shaft, its also sharp, dont cut yourself) Also clean the outside of the bushes on either side of the head unit. Then with your hand move the head unit to the middle of the machine and put ONE drop of oil on either side of the head making sure you dont mess any and also making sure it goes to the back and front of the shaft. Move the head slowly left and right, spreading the oil outwards. If necessary use a second drop but do not over oil the shaft under any circumstances, the more oil the more dust builds up. This will solve your problem.
Hi, This is the problem with the sensor. It tries to read the size of the paper, the sensor is on the side of the carriage assy(cartridges are installed on this assy). You can try cleaning this sensor or get it replaced or some times the service center will replace the carriage unit as a whole.

My system printer is an old style traction printer - Panasonic KX-1124. I'm a furniture maker and need to print full size long curves for patterns.
I'm migrating from AutoSketch to AutoCAD 2002 and am getting an error trying to print.
When I hit plot and select the KX-1124 AutoCad gives me the message "Paper size in the layout is not supported by the selected plot device.
The layout will use the papersize specified by the plot device."
When I check the properties the media source says the paper is 8-1/2 by 11 inches. Which is correct.
But under User Defined paper sizes/modify standard paper sizes, the 8-1/2 by 11 size shows a width of 17" and height of 5.50" Modifying that only allows to change the borders.
Please advise on how to change the printable area back to 8-1/2 by 11. I don't have any problem with other application including my old AutoSketch apps.
You need to set up your pen assignments in Autocad, have you done this? ie, Pen1 is 0,25 black, pen2 is 0,35 blue etc, etc. If this is not done you will have problems with colours and line thickness's.
hmmm.. we only have two computers at my work connected to a router. the designjet has a network card going straight to it. i connect to the router wireless and it reads vista. my boss connects to the design jet thru the router as well with a network card rj cable with xp pro. as for our printer it can be connected via router and does work fine but my boss has it directely connected to his computer and i share it off of his system. then we also have a zerox machine connected via router as well. maybe your router is going out? try a new one or a better one and see if that fixes it. it maybe defected or time for a new one.......
if it was working before then maybe its the router.
You doesn't say what application and OS versions you have, or if the printer is shared from a server or connected locally to a workstation. This is signifcant to solve the problem. Please clarify.
To make this work properly, all machines should have the HPGL driver and all drivers should have both the "Autorotate" "Inked Area" boxes ticked - both under General > Printing Preferences > Advanced AND under Advanced > Printing Defaults > Advanced.
Then you should create a paper size that is as wide as the media is wide, and longer than the longest/widest paper size you're ever going to print (6-10 feet long is OK!) - BOTH under Printing Preferences AND under Printing Defaults. This will ensure that every "odd" paper size (within media width limits) is printed without problems.
If the printer is installed on a server and shared, these settings should be done on the server - and the driver should be reinstalled on the workstations. If not, these chanvges should be done on each workstation that has access to the printer over the network.
When using older versions of AutoCAD you might have to reinstall the printer there as well for the changes to take effect.
Note: This solution has worked successfully over several years while working at HP support. The suggestion about the looong paper size may sound strange but it works!
This is a common problem on the 500 range, not so common on the 1050. A quick way around the problem (using the parallel port only) is to load the HP Designjet 750c drivers. Send the drawing to the 750 using memory in computer option and it WILL print.
Was the plot originally done on a size D or E plotter.. A .pdf is generally not a good way to send a plot that has to be done to scale.. Can they re-send the plot in a hpgl format, or a format that you can use in another program, liks ACAD, and then print it through that program? This would provide you with some control, that a pdf document will not allow.
This is just a stab in the dark for me, but I am familiar with plotters in general, just not the many formats to print from..
i have seen this problem before. if this is the same problem? have you used this printer and autocad before ? i mean without error? if this is the same problem, we never could get autocad to work properly and had to replace the DJ1055CM printer with a T1100. hope this helps you.

This may sound silly, but I'm curious what happens if you use plain paper and set it to "film".
