I wonder if you can help me please. My washer is 18 months old. After six months of using it, it started ripping T-shirts. It seems to rip only T-shirts and they are all ripped in the same place. It's like two or three small holes on the tummy area of the T-shirt. I can't figure it out. I don't know why, but it's done that to ALL my T-shirts. I'm not sure if the washer is doing this or the dryer. Have you heard this complaint before? When it was still under warranteee, I called GE and they came over. The guy tried to feel all around the inside of the washer and dryer for something sharp but didn't find anthing. He replaced the basket, but my clothes still came out ripped shortly after. I appreciate you taking the time to help. You're my only resort at this point.
Solution!
GE has replaced the "boot" (the large rubber gasket at the opening of the washer) on my washer. This has fixed the problem!
Although the majority of people I spoke with at GE did not know about this, eventually I got a repair technician out here who spoke with one of the engineers. The engineer said that there was a problem with the boot causing clothing to rip. The new boot we have on our washer covers a ring of plastic just on the outside of the metal drum (the plastic rim remains stationary while the metal drum spins - this is the cause of the ripped clothing) - the old boot left this plastic ring exposed. Our washer was only 8 months old - so even if your washer is new, if your clothing is being ripped, insist that the boot be replaced for an updated version.

My response is similar to wmb1's...in fact, I printed the post to show my service guy when he came to my house. He called another tech and found out about the new gasket and ordered one and replaced it a few days later. The new gasket looks identical to the old one with one exception. On the upper inner right edge (if facing the washer) there is a wedge shaped ramp prodruding from the gasket angling back into the basket. If you look at other brands like LG or Bosch, they all have something similar...and have for some time. When clothes start the spin cycle, they can sometimes lay just outside of the metal basked and touch the gasket. This isn't a problem on wash cycle, but doing 800-1000 RPM while rubbing against a piece of rubber will pull all the fibers out of whatever fabric is touching it resulting in a pea to quarter sized hole. The new ramp on the gasket is designed to 'flip' any clothes left outside the confines of the basket (where the gasket is) back into the basket where they won't be subject to massive amounts of friction. If you think about it, the opening is roughly two feet in diameter. At 1000 RPM for 3 minutes, your article of clothing stuck hanging outside the basket (without the new gasket) is rubbing the equivalent of just over 3.5 miles on a piece of tacky (sticky, not in the fashion sense) rubber.
In short, if you don't have the gasket w/ the "flip-lip," call GE and raise he|| until they replace yours.
What the heck! I am so frustrated with all of the holes in our t-shirts and nice clothing. The holes are always in the same place, on the front of the shirt at the bottom. We had a repair man out who claimed he filed down one of the holes in the washer. Of course the holes are still occuring. We've had over $1000 worth of clothing ruined and still no answers. Anyone know who to contact for some answers? I agree, we should all get together and bring this to the media or consumer reports. This is insane!
I have the same GE washer with the ripping issues. I have had serviceman after serviceman out. They have continued to say I don't load the washer right or I overload. The last seviceman ordered the boot (seal) to be installed on my washer. That has been a little over a month ago and I have not had a ripping issue....fingers crossed!! I think GE is well aware of this problem and needs to do a major recall. This applicance does not live up the the cost. I have filed a claim with the GE claim dept and am going thru the process to get refunded on the clothes that were destroyed. I luckily had kept a lot of the clothes because I planned on writing a complaint letter. I have not received the reimbursement yet....we will see.
I, of course, has this same problem. It always seems to be my husband's light weight golf shirts or son's NFL jerseys. The thinner material is getting ripped somehow. Unlike other posts, these are not small pea-sized holes. These clothes are coming out completely shredded, as if a dog chewed it up. I think I am going to take the advice of CTCONSUMER's post and try the mesh bags. I finally know it's not my fault for over-loading the washer! I have told all my friends not to buy this washer. GE definitely needs a recall on these washing machines.
I had the same problem with ripping and read that even with the replacement parts the problem returned after 13-15 months. I have always put bras in a zippered fabric (not meshed) bag. The idea of doing smaller washes on lighter spin defeats the energy savings. So I have 2 large mesh laundry bags, each with 1/2 of the load. I put one on top of the other. No more rips!! Also it keeps small things out of the pump and prevents unbalanced loads. It's a $15 solution
If you don't want/can't afford the fix (out of warranty--Buy 2 large mesh or polyester fabric laundry bags, like the college kids bring home. Evenly place wash in the two bags, so they weigh about the same. Pplace in the washer--and no more rips. This also prevents unbalanced loads. The clothes come out just as clean. Fix cost about $15!!

I have had so many outfits ruined and we have had the gasket replaced twice. I am so sick of this ****, I am ready to throw this front load washer in the garbage...if we had the money, I would. We still need a new dryer but there is no way in hell I will purchase a GE product. My Solution is DO NOT BUY GE..... wish someone warned us.
I bought a GE front loader 6 mo ago and many of my towels are being ripped. I wish people can put the model # of the appliance that's giving them a problem. There may have to be a recall on it.
Mine is a top loader but I'm having the same problem. sucks shredded hardly shirts shredded even had a pair of jeans with a hole the size of the silver dollar in it. My model #GTW465ASN1WW

I too have noticed these little holes in our t-shirts but after doing some investigation, I don't think it is my washer/dryer. Those two are definitely ripping my clothes, sheets, pillowcases, everything I throw in there. The rips from the washer/dryer are like scissor cuts, you can see that it was snagged on something and then pulled and ripped.
The little holes, on the other hand, we are pretty sure are getting ripped from the rough edge that we have on our countertops. We have slab granite and the builder didn't put a nice bullnose edge on, but instead just polished the flat side of the granite, so the corners are still a little rough. The little holes are at the perfect hieght for when we stand at the sink and do dishes. My wife as started putting a towel over the corner while she does dishes and she claims that she isn't seeing the little holes anymore.
I hope this helps some of you out there. Now, I need to figure out how my washer/dryer is ripping my laundry!
I have had the ripping issue for sometime now. Until I read that so many other people were having the same problems, I thought I was doing something wrong or overloading the machine. The ripping/tiny holes problem always seems to be my husbands clothes. He is 6' 7" tall and has a hard enough time finding clothes that fit. Almost all of his t-shirts have tiny holes that have become large holes. He put on his favorite pair of lounge shorts the other night, the left leg was completely shredded. I had a brand-new North Face jacket come out of the machine completely shredded. That's when I decided someone needs to be contacted. I think its the boot. A good friend has the same Whirpool Duet machines but the newer models. She has no ripping issues. I looked @ her boot and it's much wider than mine, that white plastic piece/ring is covered. I really think it's the boot. I am calling Whirpool tomorrow and hope to solve this problem. Good luck to all.
I'm having the same problem with my GE washer BUT for those of you whose t-shirts are being ripped up in the same (belly button) area....it is likely NOT your washer or dryer. I've had 3 of my t-shirts ripped in that area and wondered what the culprit was. Turns out, it was the metal button on my jeans! It was rubbing against the front of my kitchen countertop as I leaned in to wash my dishes and tearing my shirts in that area. My solution is to tuck in my t-shirt or be more careful not to lean against the countertop.
There is a new boot, it has a large (knobby) on top that directs the clothes away from the front lip. Also make sure the machine is level (front to back). I usually adjust the front of the washer a wee bit higher in the front, to make the clothes naturally fall back from the front. Make sure you put your level on the top of the machine along one of the sides. Not the center.
We have had the same problem with our GE washer. For about 6 months I could not figure out if it was our washer or our dryer but after thoroughly reviewing my washer I see that the rubber around the boot is fraying away. We had this boot replaced once already and have had the washer for less than 2 years. The clothes that get ruined are similar to everyone else on this post, they are my husbands workout clothes shirts and shorts and they come out shredded no matter what cycle I run it on or the size load. I will never buy GE again. The model number on the washer we have is WCVH6600HMS. Hopefully they will fix this issue since I refuse to wash my husbands clothes in our own washing machine due to the hundreds possibly thousands of $$$$ lost in this piece of ****!!
My GE GTW465ASN1WW washer isn't even 5 months old got it from my home warranty shipped here in the Box. I have lost about five Harley shirts 17 socks LOL I'm guessing about the socks and even had a pair of jeans come out with a silver dollar sized hole in the calf. The shirt I'm wearing right now has one sleeve almost completely gone, but you can't just go out and buy Harley shirts on the cheap, so I mend what I can.
The service guy will be here tomorrow afternoon and I will hit you guys back and let you know what he says. Not for nothing .. if it hadn't been for this feed I never would have even thought to call GE.

Same problem.... we are 4 in the family and it has been ripping one of my daughters Tee shirts all the time. We wondered why only hers, but this morning when I pulled out my nice black sweater from the dryer. I see the little holes it. Tee shirts had been always the target coz my daughter is the only one who wears those expensive softy Tee shirts. She is been very frustrated and has lost quite a few expensive shirts with holes in them. I am scared to put the clothes in the dryer, but we don't have a choice (here in Calgary).........Hopefully I can find a solution before ruining more of the expensive clothes we can lose!!!!!
I have a new set of Speed Queen washer/dryer which is doing the same thing. The dealer sanded down the drum but could not find a problem. We contacted manufacturer's warranty dept. and they told me that we were using too much bleach (we DO NOT USE bleach)!!!
I'm glad I found this website. I sent it to the rep I have been dealing with and told him to read it. I'm thinking a lot of these appliances are manufactured with the same parts.
I have the GE WBVH6240 and just pulled my nephew's brand new Old Navy long sleeved shirt out... minus the entire lower 6 inches of the sleeve! I can't even find the rest of the sleeve, just some random threads scattered around the rest of the load. During the last spin at around 8 minutes left I heard a really intense thumping noise, at a high speed so it sounded like an air hammer. I was two stories away in another end of the house, that's how loud it was.
I looked at my boot after reading this and it has that nub thingy on it. We bought this from a GE appliance repairman (go figure) that bought floor models and resold them. I guess maybe he knew to replace it. My question is: what else could the sleeve have caught on, and how do I get to the filter to hopefully find the rest of the sleeve?
I'll also add that we have the washer set up in front of a framed wall that is still open so I can see the back of the machine while it runs. I noticed that the vent on the upper right side was spewing out a LOT of steam and it smelled faintly of something burning, which was probably the shirt. I've never seen steam blow out of that thing like that before. Maybe that is a clue???
Thanks to the person who wrote solution #2 we will be having the boot replaced and I am hoping for the best. Like all of you I have had hundreds of dollars of clothing ruined by this washing machine. Mostly my husbands golf shirts that run $50-$80each. This is such a dissapointment. Hopefully this will be the solution.
Hi, was just searching the web to see if anyone else had the same problem as us, ie. small holes appearing in many of my thin material clothes, old or new. I have just read many of your posts and can see that it is a common problem, only thing is that I have a BOSH front loader!

my roper is ripping holes in all towels and wash cloths repair men with all of thes same complaints have to know about this problem why do they come in take washer apart charge us service call and actlike they don't know a thing about this prob .. I like all of you above am almost out of towels and jerseys also my dad had me convinced I was crazy and i was doing something wrong.. he told me to just wash a few things at a time .. I have been doing that I have tried everything I even was thinking maybe my laundry powder was doing it but I have been using same powder for 40 yrs please let me know if any of you were able to get ge or whom u purchased your washer from to fix this problem thank you michelle

We have had two service calls ("You must have put too many clothes in the washer"), spoken with customer service ("We can only replace it if there is a manufacturer defect, and your technician stated there is nothing he can repair"), customer service headquarters ("We will send it over to the Exceptions Team"), and received a message from the Exceptions Team ("You must have closed the door on the clothes and that is what damaged them"). The clothing clearly has friction burns or abrasions that can only be from being caught between two parts, then pulled and ripped apart. The door does not have anywhere to catch (nor, I might add, do our other pieces of clothing...); however, there is a sharp plastic rim which stays stationary while the metal drum spins just a centimeter or two away. Additionally, little pieces of rubber can be found in the gasket whenever the pieces of clothing get ripped, as if the gasket or plastic rim have been subjected to friction. This product is still under warranty, yet GE will not discuss replacement, reimbursement, repair, etc. I am amazed that they can come up with many reasons why we must be causing the damage (how much operator error is involved with putting clothes in a washing machine? it isn't as if I'm complaining that my clothes turned pink), when the clothes are abraded, torn, and shredded. I have never seen this before with any of the many washers I have used over the years, now 3 times in 8 months with a brand-new washer.
I am having the same problem! I called GE today and they stated that there is no recall and I have to pay for the tech to come out and take a look, since I did not opt for the extended warranty! We spent a lot of money in hopes of having a good product thus not needing an extended warranty!!! Well, now we are wasting a bunch of clothing!!! They are holes from the size of a quarter to little holes like a moth was going to town on them!!! It has been happening to a lot of our gym clothes i.e. short, t shirts, too!! GE does not want to take responsibilty for the defect??? I will have to pursue futher with the local news station??? Consumer Reports??? Online Bad reviews???
I have a GE front loader and GE dryer. I've noticed little holes in the waist area of t shirts. I thought I had moths so I bought moth balls for my closet and my laundry room. Still getting holes. Just now I have a t shirt torn in 3 places and holes the size of quarters. I checked the rest of the load - nothing but other t shirts and soft clothing. Nothing else is torn or holey.
Don't know why this is happening.

We also lost several clothes, mostly children's, T-shirts and other extensible fabric to the descibed scissor cuts. I read form the thread that the fix is to replace the plastic gasket with one that is less sharp. GE has to perform this. At what cost? This is a conception error. Any recall?
We bought the GE front loader washer 13 months ago. It began ripping our clothes about 6 months into its use. We thought we were going crazy when we kept finding shredded clothes (with and without black marks) or clothes with holes (from baby clothes to sweaters to polyester blends). After about 6 items damaged, we knew there could be no other source than our washer and actually saw an item get caught between the rubber gasket and the drum during a cycle. GE sent a repairman out who replaced the gasket. The problem reoccurred several months later. The same repairman came out again and suggested that I had loaded the washer incorrectly. I know how to use a front loader as I had a pair at our last home (for 3 years no problems-a great Whirlpool Duet set!). He had to go back and talk to other technicians because he couldn't find a problem other than emptying the filter which had debris and a baby sock in it. (By the way, to change this filter you need to take apart the front of the machine with a screwdriver and the repairman said I shouldn't have to do this as part of regular maintenance.) I told the repairman that I had seen numerous customers reporting shredding problems on the internet and perhaps this machine was made on a Friday before a long weekend (implying that it was just a dud) He said he hadn't had many calls about this model. The next thing I knew I received a call from GE saying in a few days they would be sending me a new washer (same model) because the technician deemed it "unrepairable". I hadn't even asked for a new one. About 5 months into this new washer and we have had 2 shredded clothes. The phone staff and repairman for GE were courteous and as helpful as they could be. Bottom line, not all front loaders are created equal. If they replaced the machine for me (without even asking!) they are acknowledging there is a problem. I reviewed epinions.com and found 12 reviews about clothes shredding and another consumer site that had a similar story. Also I find the cycles (even the speed cycle) too long and sometimes the clothes are not spun very dry. I noticed the gasket is also blamed for floods. I haven't experienced this but I am getting more leary the more I read. I will be calling today about the most recent shredding.
I am having the same problem. We have lost at least seven or eight shirts due to this same issue. I had to literally "vacuum" the inside of my washer yesterday, because it shredded one of my shirts so bad that after I removed all the other clothes, it was all over the drum & the door! This is ridiculous! We have had a repair technician out several times, but he just keeps replacing the gasket (boot). I have actually stood & watched the machine & can see the clothes catching in between the gasket & the drum. This is obviously a defect in the machine & GE needs to recall this model until the problem is resolved.
Twice now in loads containing only long sleve tee shirts and sweaters the same area toward the end of the sleeve has two holes in the end. This time the sweater had what looked like soap residue left near it. I figure it was snagged on the metal piece where the soap dispenses? (near the front gasket? I do need a solution for this. I have also had towels and wash clothes get holes in them. In no case was there something in the load that could have caused it
I have a Frigidaire dryer and it is putting little rips in all of our shirts and t-shirts. I just bought 8 new t-shirts for my husband. i washed them and just pulled them out of the dryer. Every single one of them has many tiny

Our washer is also ripping/shredding our clothes. It mostly rips light weight clothing. I have had a service rep out 3 times but since they do not know the cause.It is so frustrating because I hesitate washing any of our nice clothes becasue I am scared it might get ripped.
I'm so glad I found this site! I have the GE front load washer model# WCVH6260FWW. I have had at LEAST 10 shirts in the past year tear. I never notice it until I'm wearing them. I'll look down to straighten the front of my shirt and there they are.... 2-3 small holes around the tummy area of the shirt. At first I thought the clothers we defective material, but after it happened with 2 quality brands (J Crew & POLO), I knew something else was the cause. I suspected my washer, but didn't see how, I couldn't feel anything sharp inside? After finding this site I now am convinced it's the washer. I called GE and of course they'll send a tech out for $90.00 (just to look at it) plus parts and labor (my washer is 2 years old). Sadly, I have a feeling they won't be able to resolve my problem. Wondering if I should just buy a NEW one of a DIFFERENT brand!!!!!!
I do laundry for the athletic department at a college... we have the same problem, we were told that if we don't use the HE detergent, or to much, that the "oversudsing" will push the clothes toward the door then they might get caught it the gasket... nothing like putting the blame on the consumer... I'm gonna suggest that we try to get the gasket guard that was mentioned... Nothing like taking out a collegiate sport uniform and having to mend before a game!!!
My washer eats/rips/shreds my non-cotton clothes. All my active wear, that is that special sweat wicking fabric or mesh, it destroys.
Same problem with ripped clothing. I've put together a facebook group to bring together all of our names and model numbers to see if we have enough to support a recall. I think its worth a try. See

I just put in a complaint with GE for Model WPGT9350CPL. I am so thrilled to read this because I thought I was crazy. I retired my favorite belt because I thought it was the only thing near my tummy and that was where the majority of the small cuts where. The cuts had continued and I started putting less clothes in the washer with the idea of maybe too much weight caused the clothes too much friction.I seperate the the jeans and now my sons Gymboree rugby shirt came out with an impossible hole on the upper arm. No belt or denim could be to blame. Help. I paid of fortune for these.

We had a GE washer and used it 2 times in our BRAND new house and the gasket went out, they gave us a new washer...ate 3 items, bitched....2 yrs. later....now it doesn't even spin our clothes dry and shuts itself off with 30 min. to go no matter what we put in it..the clothes come out sopping wet!!! I'd never buy another one in my life!!!!!

we have the exact problem as everyone else. I bought my washer back in December 2007 approx 6 months after we got the washer it started ripping our clothes. I called GE they came out and "repaired" it stating the boot needed to be replaced, about a month later it ripped the clothes again. We ended up having someone come out to the house around 10 times and at the end we were told we needed a new drum, so they basically replaced the whole washer. It worked ok until today, once again it is ripping our clothes. I tried to call GE but with it being memorial day they are unavailable. I tried to get reimbursed for the clothes that were ripped but no luck with that. I emailed pictures of the clothes, received a claim #, and to this day continue to call to check status of my claim and I always get told someone will call me back. I probably wont see a dime. If I had the money I would go and buy a new washer, but at this time I dont. I can guarantee I will never buy another GE item as long as I live..

I have a GE PROFILE WASHER MODEL WPGT9150 and I have been searching forever to see why a lot of my shirts have been destroyed! Little holes in the lower front part of the shirts around the belly area. OMG! I thought I was losing my mind. I have about 100 shirts that have been ruined. Can my washer be fixed without paying an arm and a leg? I am so mad about this!!!!!!
