Canon Squeal I recently bought a Canon A1 35mm film camera off eBay. The outside is in amazing condition but the seller did not use the camera for a very long time so it had not been lubricated. I put a new battery in it and pressed the shutter release button and heard a squeal and the shutter was staying open way too long. I'm not experienced enough to trust lubricating it myself and wanted to know if you did this in your store and if you could give me an estimate on how much it would cost. I'm just afraid of spending more having it cleaned up and lubricated than I did on the camera itself. I bought it for only $100. Thank you!

Simplest answer is to replace the battery. If it hasn't been used or charged for so long the battery will be considered 'Old' so it will not hold charge. I think the higher quality brand name batteries for it are usually a reasonable price and not expensive.

I don't see any teeth on the sprocket? When you feed the film in, always try one full frame wind on, before you close the back. A roll of 36 exposures contains enough for 38.

Almost all early Quantaray lenses (and Sigma lenses, Sigma made Quantaray) in the Canon EOS mount will show error messages on Canon digital cameras (but still work fine on older EOS film cameras). usually err99 but err01 also. There is no DIY fix and Sigma ran out of update parts years ago. Current production lenses and Canon made lenses will not have this problem. This lens would only work for someone shooting EOS film cameras with no intention of "upgrading" their system to digital Canon cameras in the future.

John, there is a difference in sync times between film and digital flash. It's taken the third party manufactures a little time to catch up so there is a lot of "film" flash units out there. I'm understanding that the Sigma flash doesn't fire at all which is pretty amazing I would have thought it would fire just not at the correct time. This flash isn't a total loss because it can be used wireless with a slave unit for fill or even a main light triggered from a mini transmitter on the camera hot shoe. I use this type of system for a location shoot, there are no wires and I can set up and balance my lighting to each set with no more dark backgrounds hope this was a help

That likely wouldn't fix it now. The cheap generic batteries sometimes cause this problem. Let me make a suggestion, if you go to camerasand parts.com they only charge $69 to totally service the camera up, that includes the power problem too and also the shipping back. The good thing is that since you have a power problem, they'll swap out your battery for you too if that was the problem. Just thought to mention that as a suggestion, they're amazing if you need help with a Canon Powershot Digital Camera. If things don't work out with the seller, here's a great option and maybe the seller will pitch in to have it serviced up.

Yes and no.
These old flashes were designed long before digital cameras were out. Even before AF cameras were out. With tinkering in the different modules, they were made compatible with most brands, including contact placement, voltages, etc. right up through the first 2 EOS AF film Canons. Then they redesigned them for AF film cameras and then again for the Digitals. I suggest you sell the 433 and get a Digital Sigma or Sunpak. It will not harm your camera and will have many more features.

You should get your money back. Never buy something that you have to put money into to have it working properly. You should not attempt to repair this yourself. If you want to keep it, and pay even more money, take it to a shop.

did you mean the shutter wouldn't open and close?

if yes, this is common to most cameras idled for years. the shutter curtain or leaves stuck, or the electronic unit that powers the shutter mulfunction.

eBay sellers are not always honest. return it if you are lucky or file a complaint. let me tell you about my experience there. i bought a used Yashica, but when it arrived, some parts went wrong enenthough i specifically asked, the condition was not as stated, and lens cap seen on pic was not included. the seller was a kind of rude manner, he just refused to admit though eBay suspended him from trading.
