I have a 20 year old Ruud gas water heater with a power vent. The model is PVP 40-1. Sometimes it will not heat water. The power vent is running but the burner is not. If I turn off the power switch and...

Hi Rick,

First of all, no one has a 20 year old water heater! What have you been feeding it? Distilled water ???.

While a smart a$& might suggest a new water heater (hey, at that age, it's gotta be on it's last legs and if you don't have an insulating blanket, standby costs are probably very high), but I'm not an S.A.

Power ventilators generally have a pressure sensor somewhere on the air side that tells the system the vent fan is operating, before turning on the ignitor (do you have a standing pilot?) or the main gas valve. The air sensor may look like a bellows with a tube attached.

I'm puzzled that power reset puts things right... What gas switch are you referring to? Do you mean main gas valve?

If the issue is not the vent sensor I mentioned, may be time for the big kids or a new unit. Oooops, I'm not an SA. ??

RUUD PVP75E-1 Gas Water Heater short cycling

1) Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve:

2) Otherwise Rheem-Ruud does not post service manuals

3) Sound like bad gas control valve thermostat.
Newer Honeywell electronic controls can be replaced without draining tank.
Older mechanical controls are replaced by removal from tank after tank is drained.

Time to call qualified service technician. And watch what that person does to learn about your water heater.
I assume you have Honeywell Icon gas valve. Honeywell makes different several model numbers.

Here is 'typical' Honeywell Icon gas valve service manual for Bradford White, that may or may not apply to your water heater. It shows testing for Icon and disassembly instructions, and error codes.
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Bradford-white-service-manual-44943-D.pdf

Gas water heaters today require yearly service that includes cleaning burner parts and combustion chamber, checking vent and air intake, electrical connections, testing gas valve, checking gas pressure, bleeding air out of gas line, etc. These are things you can learn to do by reading service manual, and making sure you have a spare water heater around to connect real quick if experiment goes wrong.
If Icon gas valve is problem, that control is modular and can be replaced without draining tank.

I have a Kenmore Econominder water heater. Model 153-332040 40 gal natural gas/direct vent WH. The last several days it starts up and runs for about 10 seconds 1-2 times before it stays on and heats up...

Water heater burner assembly and combustion chamber probably needs clean and maintenance.
I suggest calling sears service 1-800 469-4663 or plumber.

I'm on Sears/ American/ Rheem/ Reliance etc gas water heater websites most days, and read gas water heater manuals continually.

Most people don't fix air conditioning without knowledge going in, but people think water heaters are simpler, because water heaters were simpler a few years ago.
Today, gas water heaters require testing equipment, and specialized tools, plus replacement parts.

Possible problems include: Improper fuel-air mixture, dirty air intake, venting problems, gas control valve problems, air in gas line, low gas pressure, dirty combustion parts, Water condensate dripping on burner, chemicals stored inside same room. Service technician will review all these things during troubleshoot, and you can watch technician and glean information for keeping water heater working longer than warranty.

If repairs are going to cost more than $400, then install new gas water heater yourself same day:

My new tankless WH stopped working. It gives hot water for about 15 sec, then starts flashing C7 12 or C2 11. How can I fix this, We had it for a month now & it worked before.

11 The Gas Shutoff Valve is not opened
completely.

12 Gas Service has been interrupted.
LP Gas is running low. (LP models only)

I think C7 is where the startup sequence ended...and then you get the error code

If less than a month old...contact your customer support

Whirlpool water heater pilot light does not stay lite

I have a Lowe's Whirlpool water heater. I've experienced the same problems as I've seen described here. My pilot light started going out several times a day. It was not such a big deal, the tank is well insulated so the water would stay warm - I'd just re-light the pilot before going to bed and before going to work. That worked well for about three days, but the problem got progressively worse until it just would not light at all. I replaced the thermocouple with a Honeywell universal thermocouple that I got at Home Depot - that did not solve the problem. I'm very handy, so I decided instead of going through warranty service and having to wait three or four days for replacement parts, I'd buy a new gas valve at Lowes and try that. It cost $54.00 and it worked. By the way, I put the original thermocouple back in and the pilot light stays lit - it was definitely the gas valve and not the thermocouple in my case. It was a real pain to do since I had to drain the tank, but it only took about three hours total. From what I've read, these things last anywhere between six months and two years. That's ridiculous, but at least I have hot water now. If you are reading this because you are considering purchasing a Lowes hot water heater, DON'T!!! I started my search for a replacement gas valve at Home Depot, but they don't stock them. Lowes had 8 on the shelf. That tells you something right there - the water heaters Home Depot stocks don't need to have the gas valves replaced before the tank wears out - there's no demand for the valves so Home Depot doesn't stock them. Lowes probably sells 8 of them a week - all the boxes were shiny and new, not dirty and dusty like some items get when they sit around in home improvement stores.
