I purchased a component cable (rectangular plug I think called VGA plugs into female left side laptop toward the back and red, blue and green RCA type jacks for LG TV.

Look for a Function Key (fn) on your laptop for activating the VGA external monitor.

If your fn button is blue (for example) all of the keys on your laptop that are activated when you hold down the fn button will have an option in blue. Look for a blue icon on a key that roughly looks like a monitor or two monitors.

With everything hooked up, press and hold the fn key, then tap the corresponding key to turn on the external monitor.

Having said that... the cable you are describing has a VGA (blue 15 pin connector) that plugs onto the VGA jack of your laptop and splits that signal into a set of component RCA plugs. Its critical how you plug these into the correct place on your LG TV component connections. I know such adapter cables exist but I've never seen one work.

I have a sharp PC-GP10 CM laptop but the screen has gone black after my daughter pressed a button. I dont know what she did. I have rebooted and the laptop comes on but the screen is still black. Any...

Look for the Fn Button bottom left of the keyboard. Hold this button down then press F5. You should see the screen flash up. Have an external monitor connected to the vga output on the back of the sharp while you try this. The Fn Key and F5 combination is used to swith modes between laptop and external monitor, Dual view etc. You should see some activity when you do this. Hope this helps you out. Ps... Using the Fn key with F6 and F7 will Alter the brightness of the screen on your laptop.

How can I get my screen back on?

ok maybe what happened is that you accidentally enabled the external monitor function. That is when you want to connect your computer to a monitor, projector, etc. your monitor will turn black and you will be able to see the other monitor. most computers you have to press the keys Fn+ either f5 or f8 that will return to your screen.
if the configuration on your keyboard is different look for the key that says CRT/LCD and combine it with Fn if you can not find it try Fn and all the f keys on top (Fn+f1, f2, f3, etc) when you do that wait a few seconds to see if your monitor reacts.

if it works for you don't forget to rate me

The display is black

If you can still hear everything else working try adjusting the brightness, there should be keys to do this on the keyboard, if it has no effect i suspect your lcd back light has gone.

Screen not working but other monitor work

Your "F"keys are multi function. Look for the one with a picture of a monitor. Press the FN key adt the appropriate F key at the same time. You are probably in remote monitor mode. The F key is usually F5 or F8.

Unable to use external monitor, comes up black even though its working

I believe NEC has Fn key combinations that not only toggle the video output selections, but there is another that will turn the display on and off. I know on HP, the video toggle combination is Fn + F4.

The screen remains black when i turn it on. The power button turns green and blinking but the screen remains black.

try using the Fn + F?key (has a graphic of a monitor)F5 or F7 to switch the system from external monitor to the laptop ... you probably have it in presentation mode for external monitor.

Screen not working

It could be the 'back light' is burned out.
Or
Press Fn and F5 simultaneously to make sure the display
priority is not set for the built-in screen.
Or
Press the 'brightness up' key a few times.

Display problems
Here are some typical display problems and their solutions:
The screen is blank.
Display Auto Off may have gone into effect. Press any key to
activate the screen.
You may have activated the instant password feature by pressing
Fn and F1 simultaneously. If you have registered a password, press
any key, type the password and press Enter. If no password is
registered, press any key. The screen reactivates and allows you to
continue working.
If you are using the built-in screen, make sure the display priority is
not set for an external monitor. To do this, press Fn and F5
simultaneously (once). If this does not correct the problem, press Fn
and F5 simultaneously again to return the display priority to its
previous setting.
HINT: Holding the Fn key and pressing the F5 key several times will
advance you through the display options.
If you are using an external monitor:
❖ Check that the monitor is turned on.
❖ Check that the monitor’s power cord/cable is firmly plugged in.
-- Try adjusting the contrast and brightness controls on the
external monitor

Screen stays black on startup of toshiba satellite L300

have you tried either switching between external and internal monitor usally Fn + F5 on toshiba or try plugging a monitor into the back and see if it displays.
if you get a display on the external monitor then its probably a screen or inverter fault if you donot get a display to an external screen then it is likley t be the graphics on the board itself.
hope this helps
