DVD drives are "plug and play" you should not need any drivers for it above Windows XP. Check that it is detectected in your CMOS on boot up. If not there, you may have a connection problem or the drive has failed.
For that you need recovery disk or winxp or vista bootable disk. Then boot your computer with disk. When you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key to enter in bios. Then go to boot menu then set first boot device as your cd / dvd rom. Then save and exit . Then it boot with disk. Then follow the procedure and if you want previos windows then choose "r" option for repair. Let me know if you need further assistance. Thanks.
some burners can only use certain formats for burning to. For example, CD Burners may only be able to use CDRs, and not CDRW (RW is rewriteable). DVD Burners may only be able to use DVD+R, or DVD-R, not able to use DVD+or-RW at all, or you might be trying to use DVDRAM. Have a look at the specs listed in the user manual, and go from there.

On that tray there is a small pin hole. Straighten a paperclip and push it in there. That should open the drive. Put in a CD and see if the drive spins. If it does it just means that the spring for the drive door no longer works and I suggest you live with it. If, after getting a CD in it the drive won't recognize it you will need to check the cables inside the machine to see if anything came loose. If nothing is loose you probably need to replace the drive.
This is a common problem with old or poor quality DVD/CD players. Try going to My Computer, right clicking on the drive and selecting 'eject'. I this doesn't work then just replace the drive and all will be well. If the drive is not shown in My Computer then you must assume it is dead.
Hi fantisy, It's not uncommon for your DVD player to not have the drive letter you were expecting it to have. Let me show you. Place a CD or DVD in to your cdrom drive, close the drawl. Close any windows that may open Ok here we go. Right click once on the Start button, than slide up to & left click on Explorer. Take a look at the icons. Left click once on the - sign to the left of C:
The icon you see to the left of C: is a hard drive. Look down to your DVD drive, see the differance in the icon, (a cd on top of a hard drive icon). Your E-Machine also has a SD card reader. Each card slot also shows a hard drive icon. So drive D: is your DVD player & F, G, H & I are SD card reader drives. Windows just skipped letter E.
