I have the exact same problem, TV stared doing it about 12 days ago, I ordered and replaced the Lamp, it still does the same thing...

""Lamp" light flashes for 20 seconds and then you hear PS clicking, repeats cycle 3 times before it shuts off and all 3 lamps flash!"

SOURCE: Samsung 50" DLP - Lamp Light Blinking after bulb replacement

Listen closely. The tv should make a high pitch whine as it turns on. If it does wait and see if it tries this a few times. If yes then check the bulb, I have seen cases where the lamp shoves the power connector back into the set. If the tv starts with a grown or heavy vibration noise, then your color wheel may have broken and needs replaced.

Sure, you can test by Use the screwdriver and remove the protective cover that conceals the ballast.

Observe the ballast before proceeding. If oil is leaking from the ballast, stop here and remove the ballast. Leaking oil indicates that the ballast is damaged beyond any doubt as the internal seal has been ruptured by excessive heat.

Test the high voltage side for continuity between the wires going to the ballast tombstones. There will be either one or two wires going to each tombstone fixture. Regardless of the number of wires, the colors will be the following: Blue or yellow are the power wires and white is the common or neutral wire. this could differ in many models.

Turn the Volt Ohmmeter to "ohms" and touch the ends of the two probes together. The meter should show continuity or a direct short. Touch the probes of the meter to one of the white wires and one of the colored, blue or yellow, or any wires that comes from the ballast. This should show a short or continuous circuit. If it does not, the ballast is bad and should be replaced.

Replaced the balast, tv not longer turns on and off but now it has a kind of pulsing picture. Am I looking at a new bulb? a new color wheel ? or some other surprise that I haven't heard about?

Lamp is possible especially if the ballast was bad--it powers the lamp.
Color wheel will usually display some issues--high pitched whine or fan like noise---with the lamp removed look where it faces--color wheel is there--any broken or missing pieces and it is the problem---

The wheel is directly connected to the set---set will detect if wheel not moving or moving too slow etc and almost instantly turn the lamp OFF.

Tv comes on and picture and audio go out in about 5 minutes lights blinks lamp timer Could it be lamp or balast and can both me changed by owner

Hello: This is an indication of a bad of faulty lamp. If it has been at least two years since you have purchased the unit, then replace the lamp, first as this is main fault of DLP Televisions.

Trying to turn on tv and no picture. bought new

Rulds2008 is probably right. I had the same problem, but have no TV repair shop near me. So since I have experience fixing computers, I decided to repair the TV myself. I initially repaired the Lamp, but the TV still flashed all three lights. Called Samsung and they told me that I might need to replace the ballast, but it would be best to bring it to a repair shop. The repair shop offered to come out and look at it for $150 or bring it in for $120, even though they were about 30 mins away. Ordered both parts on www.Samsungparts.com and got them in three days. Still had the three flashing lights. Took apart the entire TV (googled it on youtube) and vacuumed and dusted the TV and took apart the color wheel (about 20-30 mins). It was completed busted. Found out that if the color wheel is broken, it will not send a signal to the ballast to tell it to start up and power the lamp. So if you have replaced the lamp and/ or the ballast and it does not light up, it is more than likely that it is your color wheel (buy it on ebay or amazon, got it in three days versus a 3-4 week back order on company sites). Also, make sure the power switch on back is being pushed upwards and not downwards or the TV also will not start. Total parts cost me ($400) versus having someone else fix it and charge me double with labor and parts. TV is better than ever. Hope this helps.

Samsung DLP HLM-617W/XAA

with lamp out (door closed) the ballast should "strike" or give an arc sound, trying to fire the lamp. If it does not do that maybe the color wheel is not spinning up - has to do that first.........then the set will try to fire the lamp

TV lamp, sound.... don't come on...

The balast has a plug going directly to the lamp. There is also a thermal fuse coming off of the balast that lies above the lamp housing. Check for continuity. If open, replace.
