There are many different ways that an amp can fail but the two most common failures are shorted output transistors and blown power supply transistors (< those are not blown). There are several types of protection circuits in amplifiers. The most common are over-current and thermal. The over-current protection is supposed to protect the output transistors. Sometimes it doesn't work well enough to prevent the failure of the output transistors but it will work well enough to shut the supply down before the power supply FETs are destroyed. If the amp remains in protect mode, goes into protect mode or blows the fuse as soon as the remote voltage is applied, shorted output transistors are almost certainly the cause. If the fuse protecting the amp is too large, if the protection circuit doesn't respond quickly enough or if the power supply is poorly designed, the power supply transistors may fail. If you see a lot of black soot on the power supply transistors (near the power transformer), the power supply transistors have failed. Soot on the board doesn't necessarily mean the transistors have failed. Sometimes, technicians don't clean up the mess from a previous failure.
In general, when a transistor fails, it will either short (common for output AND power supply transistors) or open (common for power supply transistors). Transistors act like valves. They control the current flowing through a circuit. A shorted transistor acts like a valve that's stuck open (passing too much current). In the case of an output transistor, the shorted transistors tries to deliver the full rail voltage to the speaker output terminal. If you've ever seen a damaged amp that pushed or pulled the speaker cone to its limits when the amp powered up (common on some Rockford amplifiers), that was almost certainly due to a shorted output transistor. When checking transistors, you most commonly look for shorted connections inside the transistor. You do this by using a multimeter to look for low resistance connections between the transistor's terminals.
Note:
I used the terms short and open on the previous paragraph. A short (short circuit) is a path through which current flows that should not be there. An open (open circuit) is a break in the circuit.

Powersupply won't run on Orange terror Bass 500

I found both FDA2828N50F MOSFET transistors in the power supply were shorted. I replaced them and the amp worked fine. I couldn't find a reason for them to fail.

The red protect light is coming on

It is possible that your amp is going over the threshold limit of draining current to give out the protect signal. What could be done is to first checkout if your speakers are loading the amplifier, check the rating of the speakers and the impedance, must not be too low.below 2 ohms. Now check the source signal if this is bringing in any transcient signals to power out the outputs particularily high/low freq. So decrease off your bass and treble to mid position and test again. see if there is any improvement, if so there could be a filter problem with your set. Connect an external source and see if the amp powers better , in such case check for fault in cables, input lines and ground with in the set. Repeat this and check. Hope this helps you out. Good day

I have a 1800 watt amp but the red light is on but it dose sound like the bass works but not it its prime

the red light is for power in protect mode it should be orange and it will not emmit sound if you think you should have better sounding bass or more bass you can try to play with the gains on the amp or possibly if you have the negative or positive hooked up wrong from a speaker to the amp this will cause the bass to be lower and somewhat distorted double check your positive and negative wires from the speaker to the amp and make sure they are correct

Why does my KAC-8404 cut off at high volume bass?

amp 101

1/0 wire to the amp or the amps will loose power

check the connections mainly the negative

wiggle the wires see if you get a cut out or not

a cap will help you give constant power to the amp and not allow them to drain on long bass notes

hope this helps

RED Port light on AMP?

are you sure its not PROT?
the amplifier is protecting itself from fire because of something.
Disconnect the subs. and turn on.
if it comes on normally, the subs are at fault and will need attention. If the light still stays on, you hafe probably blown an output on the amplifier and it will need repair.

Powers on but no sound

Check the main amp fuse under the hood, even if it looks good just change it. Often times that light on the amp can come on just from the power amp tunon wire. Try a friends subwoofer box just to make sure the connectors on your box are good, and if that doesn't work then give me some more details....year/make/model of car, what kind of sub, what types of things do you see on the side of the amp....is there a green light as well as a red light?
