Second hand on my watch now goes in 5 second intervals

I just noticed that my second hand on my watch now goes in 5 second intervals. It had always been a constant sweep.

  • Anonymous May 25, 2009

I noticed this on my Accutron. The time would stop then temporarily run after resetting or gentle tapping but the second hand advanced in five second intervals instead of the normal one before stopping again. I hope it is only the battery. The manual did not mention this as a battery life warning.

Check the instruction manual if you have one. Tag-Heuer watches move in 5 second intervals to let you know the battery needs replacing. A neat feature. Now you know that you have a real Tag!

Large second sweep hand on citizen ca0258-03e

On your particular model the seconds hand is the small dial at 6 o'clock and if you look at this you should see this moving around constantly. The larger hand you may think is the second hand is actually your Chrono hand and will only go around when using the stopwatch etc.

For about a month, while the watch did keep time, the second hand only moved 4 seconds at a time. In other words, it would no move each second, just in 4 second intervals. Now it is not keeping time,...

Your watch is fitted with EOL (end of life). This does not mean end of watch life, but end of battery life. Replace battery and watch will work as it should. Rate me, please.

The second hand sweeps every 4 to 5 seconds instead of second by second - is the battery dying??

I don't know how your particular watch operates but it is a common feature to change the second hand operation when the battery is running low. So the answer to your question is YES.

Second hand not sweeping but jumps at 5 secs intervals. Appears to be keeping accurate time.

When the second hand moves in short jumps rather than a smooth sweep or a second-by-second hop, it means that the battery is about to run out. Usually, with a week or two the watch will stop working altogether. You should go and have it changed as soon as possible.

Second hand sweeping five second increments

Yes, it is sign for time to replace the battery. Your watch is fitted with EOL (end of life) device. This device forces the integrated circuit board to move seconds hand in 2 - 5 seconds increments when the battery power level is less than necessary for smooth running of the watch movement. At the same time the timekeeping of the watch is not affected and it will still keep good time for about 2 weeks.

Second hand movement

Your TAG is fitted with EOL (end of life) feature. This is the cause of that 4 seconds interval movement of seconds hand and thus indicating the time for battery replacement. The timekeeping is not affected by this- it is just warning to replace battery a.s.a.p.
Find your nearest watchmaker and ask for battery replacement.

Do not forget to rate, please.

This is to let you know that the battery needs to be replaced.make sure that you use a watchmaker that can test and replace any worn case parts so that your watch will retain it's original design water resistance.

Sweep 2nd hand operation & watch time setting on my Pulsar watch.

The larger second hand on the Pulsar PF8036 is part of the stopwatch feature. The upper button starts/stops the stopwatch feature, and the lower button operates the lap/reset function. Why they made the larger hand work only with the stopwatch instead of the smaller hand to the left is beyond me, but that's how it is designed.
