Cannot connect xbox 360 to wireless router

A few days ago I was playing on my xbox 360 online with friends using a wireless connection using my Linksys WRT54G router and all of a sudden xbox live disconnected. I right away checked if my internet was still working and it was working fine. I checked if there was a problem with just my routers wireless and turned on my laptop and was able to connect wirelessly with that. I then tried connecting my router directly to my xbox 360 using a ethernet cable and it still wont connect to xbox live. My xbox will give me several different errors.

1. Your router or ISP may be blocking access to Xbox Live
2. Your network doesn't have a sufficient MTU setting. Xbox Live requires a minimun MTU setting of 1364.

Now, I went on my routers setup page and my MTU setting was automatic but I changed it to 1364 just to check, I also set it to 1500 as well, and still, no able to connect. I also checked if the ports were still unblocked on my router and they were. I don't know what else it can be. I have been playing on xbox live for a while with the setup I currently have and all of a sudden it just stopped working. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem. It does connect sometimes but once the Xbox is powered off and back on it is hit and miss whether it will connect to XBOX Live again. Recycling power on the router will sometimes work. There is no problem with general network or internet connections only problem is Xbox Live. I am using hardwired connection.

If you use DSL I would also check to make sure you are not being port blocked by your ISP. Some will block you if you exceed bandwidth on a particular port rather than throttling you or shutting you down entirely.

How do I connect 2 or more players with the xbox controller?

Hi,

Follow these instructions:

  • Set up your Xbox Live connection by connecting your Xbox 360 to high-speed Internet. There are two options: connecting it to your network via Ethernet cable or connecting to your network via a wireless adapter. The simplest and fastest connection is connecting via Ethernet cable directly to your modem or router. If you must connect wirelessly, use the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, sold separately. See the Resources section below for connection tips.

  • 2

Test your Xbox Live connection after connecting your Xbox 360 to your high-speed Internet. Navigate to the dashboard, select "My Xbox," choose "System Settings" then "Network Settings." Run the diagnostic test to confirm your connection works. Your Xbox 360 will offer troubleshooting tips if the test fails.

  • 3

Create an Xbox Live gold account. Log out of all profiles then press the "Guide" button and choose "Join Xbox Live." Follow the prompts, entering your billing and personal information. You will also choose your gamertag during this process, which will serve as your online name and identity. Lastly, you will customize your profile. Your Xbox 360 will then create the account.

  • 4

Insert your Xbox Live multiplayer game and open the game's Xbox Live multiplayer menu. Different games have different options but certain features remain the same across all multiplayer games. There is the TrueSkill ranked matchmaking system, which pits you against players of similar skill levels. There are also unranked player matches, where you can practice and hone your skills in a non-competitive atmosphere. Lastly, there is the quickmatch matchmaking system, which automatically searches for games for you, whether they are unranked or ranked.

  • 5

Add and play with friends. Xbox Live allows users to add up to 100 friends. Add a friend by pressing the "Guide" button, navigating to the "Friends" tab, then selecting "Add Friend." Type in your friend's gamertag then press the "Start" button and choose "Send Friend Request." Your friend will need to confirm the request to complete the process. You can play multiplayer games with friends by opening your friends list and inviting them to a game lobby.

  • 6

Communicate with friends and opponents using an Xbox 360 headset. The wired Xbox 360 plugs into your controller. Once it's plugged in, you can speak into microphone and listen to others from the ear piece.

  • Hope this will help...Your response is very much appreciated...

My xbox 360 says im connected to xbox live checked network setings and it says xb ox live is up and running...however when i try to play need for speed online..it says xbox live not working functionally?...

Turn on the console and navigate to the wireless settings screen. On the Xbox, the menu path is "Settings -> Network Settings -> Advanced -> Wireless -> Settings" On the Xbox 360, the menu path is "System -> Network Settings -> Edit Settings." Set the SSID (network name) on the Xbox to match that of the wireless router. If your wireless router has enabled SSID broadcast, the SSID name should appear pre-selected on the Xbox display. Otherwise, select the "Specify Unlisted Network" option and enter the SSID there. Specify "Infrastructure" as the Network Mode. (Infrastructure is the mode used by wireless routers.) Set the Security Type to match that of the wireless router. If your router uses WPA encryption and the type of adapter connected to the Xbox does not support WPA, you will need to change your router settings to use WEP encryption instead. Note that the standard Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter supports WPA while the standard Microsoft Xbox Wireless Adapter (MN-740) only supports WEP. Save your settings and verify the network is functional. On the Xbox, the Wireless Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made with the wireless router, and the Connect Status screen displays whether a connection has successfully been made through the Internet to Xbox Live. On the Xbox 360, use the "Test Xbox Live Connection" option instead.

I own an xbox 360 elite, and I am having problems connecting to my friends while playing online. A couple of weeks ago we were able to play online just fine. A couple of days ago we were not able to...

Are one or both of you behind a router of any kind that might have a firewall feature on it blocking you from communicating with one another. It is possible that the specific port used to connect the two of you has been accidentally blocked. Try resetting security on one or both of your routers, or try connecting directly to the internet by connecting your modem to your Xbox360 directly. Doing this will show you where the problem is, if it is with the router than going directly to the modem should resolve the issue. If this does not resolve the issue than perhaps there is something wrong with your settings on the Xbox. Comment if these suggestions do not help you and we can move forward with more possible solutions.

    Good Luck!

I have a wireless router hooked to my computer & my son recently got a wireless-G USB adapter so that he can play his xbox 360 online. Will this work, or will we have to put the router on the xbox...

XBOX 360 will only work properly with a 'genuine' USB WIFI adapter designed specifically for it (and at an over inflated price IMO!).
One popular way to play 'network' via the internet is to connect the XBOX 360 to your PC via Ethernet cable and have the PC connecting to the internet either via another ethernet connection or more likely via a Wifi connection which could be via your USB adapter connected to your PC and talking to your Wifi Router)

Xbox 360 wireless adapter connects but can't join parties!

If you think its the wireless adapter, try using a laptop (that has wireless) to connect your xbox to your network. Just get a straight through (network) cable connect one end to the xbox and the other into the ethernet port on your laptop. Then go into your network settings and bridge the connections (if you don't know how to bridge connections try youtube or just google it) Now your laptop acts like your wireless network adapter. See if your problem occurs with the laptop, if not then it is the adapter. I hope this helped solve your problem.

For gaming it is best to use WEP personal, if you are try connecting with a computer. A linksys or cisco router is ideal.

Hook up wireless network to play xbox 360 online.

    Hey Lil Man23,

There are two things that you'll need in order to connect your Xbox 360 to the internet wirelessly: a wireless router and a wireless network adaptor. While both of these may often be obtained through an internet service provider (ISP), you can generally purchase both hardware devices from a local retail store.

In order to connect to the internet, your Xbox 360 will need to be set up in what is referred to as "infrastructure mode." This essentially means that your Xbox 360 will be set to connect to a single access point (the wireless router) in order to access the internet. If you're not quite sure how to do this, you should be able to find step-by-step instructions on how to do so in your owner's manual, or by using Microsoft's Xbox 360 Connectivity Wizard:

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/connecttolive/xbox360/connectionmethods/webconnectivitywizard.htm

If you're still not quite sure how to proceed, I would strongly suggest contacting your ISP for further assistance. Many ISP's are able to provide home networking services for their subscribers, but remember that there may be a charge for any in-home services provided by your ISP or any third-party company.

    Hope this helps you out.

    Sincerely,
    Aaron

    X box 360

You can't get an IP address on the Xbox that way. You need to get an IP address from a device that works as a DHCP server such as a residential router. Connecting the Xbox to the PC will do nothing for you.
