    i have 2 ipod touches 1 ist gen 1 2nd gen
    2 docking stations
    and 2 official ipod chargers

the 1st gen will charge on all of the above
but the second gen will charge on none
i get the message that charging is not compatible with this accessory

i can only charge on my pc
which is rather large and does not work in my car

i can only assume that this is apple's way of extracting some more money from your wallet

i assume there will be a software fix but this will invalidate your warrenty

the best fix is to take your ipod back and use your money to buy a cheaper competitors ie zen

I have a 2G iPod Touch with a JBL On Stage II w/ remote... I get the same error message. The speaker system works with the sound - it just will not charge the device... annoying.

  • mateoaristi Feb 03, 2009

Hey everyone im going to buy a on stage II, and i own a touch 1g, i wanna know if the speaker charges the ipod, or if the issue of the 2g touch also affects the 1g...

    thanks

  • Anonymous May 11, 2010

Thanks for the suggestion... I've tried that - and it does work (hooking JBL up to PC, then docking the 2G iTouch... however, as my JBL is used in my bedroom, and my PC is in another room of the house - this doesn't quite work.

But oh well. It doesn't take but an hour to charge the 2G iTouch... so I listen to it on the speakers to go to sleep at night, and while I'm getting ready in the morning, I charge it.... by the time I leave my house - It's ready to go.

I have the 2G touch, and got the error message. But now have plugged my usb charger (bought on ebay for under £10) into the back using the usb cable which came with the iPod Touch. Its a bit of a pain havin 2 plugs in the back of the JBL, makin it a bit more bulky, annoying since its most impressive for it's lack of size.

If you're willing to spend $40, there's an adapter available from Scosche Accessories. It comes in both black and white and they say it will convert any docking device to the new charging format. (The problem is that Apple has discontinued charging via the FireWire pin - which virtually all accessories - even including Bose - have used up to now. All the 2nd Generation stuff now uses direct USB charging, not FireWire.

Check out the convertor at:

Thank you, Nedrlndr, I love you.

Just to keep both of these great products in one thread, here's a link to a male to female extension cable for iPods:

I want to buy an iPod touch G2, but the one my best friend has won't charge on my car stereo. I came to FixYa to find the problem and found out from Nedrlndr that the G2's use a different pin to charge and suggested a solution from Schosche. I clicked the link, scanned the site and found an in-line adapter for car stereos for only $30. Thanks Nedrlndr!

The Scosche passPORT Homedock does NOT work with the original JBL OnStage II (the older white one with remote) because the Scosche is too wide to fit down into the Onstage II. You will need an extender cable like the one linked by LorraineKP. You plug the iPod into the Scosche, then use the extender cable between the Scosche and the OnStage. Not very elegant but should work (I'm shopping for an extender cable now).

The Onstage II I'm talking about:

SOURCE: getting error message software not compatible with IPod

This compatibility issue is caused by the same change with the Apple Dock Connecter introduced with the iPhone 3G. Inside the iPod / iPhone Dock Connecter are 30 metal pins. Previous iPods and iPhones allowed for charging either over pins reserved for the USB connection or pins reserved for the obsolete Firewire connection.
While Apple apparently announced this upcoming change to manufactures of “Made for iPod” accessories back in 2005, Apple only formerly discontinued Firewire charging support with the most recent iPods. New iPods and iPhones can only charge via the USB pin.
As such, there is no way that a software update can fix this issue in the future; this is truly a modification in iPod hardware.

Our sound dock does not charge our ipod touch 2nd gen. Bose manual says it does charge. The sound dock is not series 2. Are they not compatible? Thanks, Mark

The original SoundDock will not charge the iPod touch 2nd gen, or the iPhone 3G, or the new nano either. This is because Apple changed the way their new iPod products charge. (via USB only now)
There is 1 solution- Call Bose tech support. They can replace the 30 pin metal connector for a new one that will charge this. If this is not under warranty, it will cost $99, but it's worth it. New 1 year warranty, and compatibility with all iPods (except much older- non-clickwheel iPods)

My Jensen ipod docking system wont charge my i touch

The older ipods charge using 12v, the newer ones (including the Touch 2nd gen) use 5v. So a lot of docks that will charge a nano will not charge a new Touch. If a dock says it will work with the iPhone then it will work with the newer iPod Touch (2nd gen).
If you have an old dock and want to charge a new Touch (sounds like the case here) then you can get an adapter. Scosche makes one just for this.

Itouch charging

Hi there,

Some speaker systems which are only compatible for charging the ipod nanos and classics do not work with the iPod Touch and the iPhone, the internals are slighly different from one another which will not allow that speaker system to charge your iTouch.

To play & Charge your touch, i suggest getting a speaker system that supports the iPod touch platform.

Hope this helps ?!
