If it runs poorly after warmup with choke or partial choke, likely he carb needs service. First drain all the fuel, especially the carburetor bowl. Then fill with a couple gallons if fresh fuel from a fueling station.
If it still needs partial choke to run with fresh fuel then the carburetor needs a thorough cleaning.
If it runs fine with partial choke or no choke until it warms up, it may need a valve adjustment or, the ignition module is failing or even the low oil sensor.
Be sure you operate the generator on a reasonably level surface and check that the oil is at the full mark. For troubleshooting you can temporarily disconnect the oil level sensor to see if the problem goes away, but be sure to reconnect when your done testing.
The other time/temp variable is the ignition module.
Valve adjustment schedule is typically every 100 hours of operation.
If it is new and under warranty, talk to Generac about getting it fixed.
If it is old and unused, it probably needs fuel system cleaned out. Carb needs to be removed and cleaned inside and out, fuel lines need flushing, filter changed and if it has an automatic choke, it needs to be checked because it sounds like it is stuck on.
SOURCE: Generac 4456 does not start on power loss
I install and work on these everyday. If you hooked up the transfer switch you probable have a control wire wrong. check the utility power sense wire. That lets it no when to start in auto. it could be a relay or fuses. or a control board.
SOURCE: I have a 17kw generac generator that will run
I have the 18KW model and was told that most alarms relate to a low battery. Make sure the battery charger in the Transfer Switch is properly feeding the battery or hook up a mobil battery charger to the battery and see if the alarm goes away. Good Luck.
SOURCE: Generac control wires
older model Generac only haver 4 control wires:
N1
N2
23
194
if it is the included wiring harness the wires should have their numbers stamped on the jacketing and a sticker should designate the proper screw to mount it to in both the ATS and the generator housing. hooking these wires up incorrectly often results in blown fuses and/or damage to the control board in the generator.

Its the Oil sensor just pack the oil sensor wires together with a smal screw and bolt and try starting if it starts your problem is the oil sensor they tend to go bad I have run through several myself . To avoid hassles I now have overidden the sensor but I check the oil level everytime I need to use the generator

Usually answered in minutes!
Posting to help others. I had the same problem. It quit one day after running for hours. Couldn't get it started as it would backfire. The next day it started right up but after a few minuets, it would backfire and quit. I cleaned the carb but that didn't help. Then I replaced the ignition coil and now it runs as new. 20 minute job and a 20 dollar part.
