When I try the iCloud backup, it simply says 'estimating time remaining' but then doesn't get any further than that. I'm using the correct AppleID and password and it has worked previously, but not since January 2012. I've followed the instructions to have it plugged in, locked and connected to wi-fi and I've tried deleting the iCloud account and starting again from scratch but it made no difference. Any suggestions?
It is on the progress, but too slow. What you need to do is wait.
But there do have some methods to make the process faster, check out this tutorial for your reference. Hope it a help :) How Long Does it Take to Backup iPhone to iCloud

I picked 1 up for the first time and connected in 2 minutes.
In settings page where you add a wireless connection, you will need to know..
Security type, mine was wpa2 ( may be wpa/wpa2/wep)
SSID, your network name that is transmitted, mine was default
password, whatever the wireless password you chose with wpa, if you have wep, it gives you a pass key, you will need to log onto your router to get this

This sounds like a hard ware issue with you wifi antenna. Restore your device using iTunes. If it is still grayed out take it in for service at a local apple store or authorized service provider.
SOURCE: I can't turn on location services on Ipad 1 - any suggestions?
You have not mentioned whether it is not working at your home or on other networks as well, some forums say that some ISPs do not offer this service (but I have my doubts, about this).
What I would try is go to "reset
network settings" on your ipad. So go to "Settings",
"General", "Reset", then "Reset Network Settings". After you do this,
you will need to re-enter your wireless network's password. Hope this helps
SOURCE: how can i view the trash folder on ipad 1?
There is no trash folder on iPads, but you may be able to view the trash folder for the deleted email.
For instance if you use Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail, you could log into the web version of those services and check the trash bin and recover from there.
Hope that helps!

Hi, akcorydon
It's now possible to recover deleted or lost files from iPad now, even if you don't have a backup.
What you need is an iPad data recovery software, learn more here:

Hope it's never too late to rescue your data.
