My fan sometimes goes through a routine of whirring for a few seconds, slowing everything down, before relenting only to do it all again several times...........and my fan is prone to whirr randomly for a few seconds apropos of nothing............yet sometimes it is quite content and does nothing. Ideas? I did a BIOS update but it hasn't made a noticeable difference, do I need to reset?

Hmm give this method a try. Turn off computer remove AC power adapter. Remove the battery and press the power button for 30 seconds continuously. This removes the static from the system. This process is called as Power drain. This works in most of the cases. Good Luck !!!

sounds like you have a bad motherboard, or uP...is this under warranty, by chance?

Check the CPU and Fan/Heatsink assembly. I have a pretty good feeling that the CPU is heating up too much and is not being cooled properly. There may be lint or dust clogged in the fan. You can get access to this pretty easy by removing a few screws on the bottom panel that houses the CPU/fan.

I'm sorry to say this sounds like a system board failure. On my HP DV200t, a very similiar issue occured, eventually only the led where you plug in the power cord would turn blue. I replaced the system board and all the issues went away.
Hope this helps, and I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
