Problem was in car charger. Plugged in my daughers charger and problem solved

I have the same exact problem. My Navigon 2100 was working fine and then one day I went to use it and it will only work when it's not plugged in. But you can't charge the batter if it's not plugged in either. HELP!

  • norman328 Jan 27, 2009

When I plug the car charger in, the navigon device completely restarts and then all the screen shows is that it is plugged into a computer and it does now show the map.

I have the same problem, will they send a new charger free of charge?

  • Anonymous May 14, 2009

I had the same problem with a replacement charger I purchased at local stores. The charger that came with the unit got sliced in the glove box. On my 3 attempt at buying a replacement charger and taking it back, the sales person looked up the specs for the 2100. Looks as if it is 12V and the chargers they were selling were only around 5. He thought that may be the reason the device thought it was connected to a computer due to low voltage. Was the best explanation I have heard from all those I tried to get info.

The problem lies with the fact that a standard mini usb pin-out has + voltage on pin 1 and ground on pin 5. The navigon is programmed to recognize this as a computer. The navigon charger however has + voltage on pin 4 and ground on pin 5. The reason for navigon doing this as opposed to following the standard pin-out is due to the unit requiring a stronger power supply to charge the battery. USB current output on a computer does not have the capacity to do this. As a consequence, you will have to find a charger that has the right pin-out for this device ( + on pin 4 and - on pin 5 ). The tough thing is, there is no way to tell one from the other, they look identical. However, I have found that chargers with a capacity of 1000 ma or greater are pinned-out like above ( + on pin 4 and - on pin 5 ). Other than using a multimeter to verify the pins, the only thing to do, would be to plug it in and see if it works. Hope this helps.

My boss had a Navigon 7100 with the power cord permanently installed in his company vehicle. When the Navigon was moved to another company vehicle, nobody could get it to work with any aftermarket power cord. It always displayed the same image of the GPS connected to a computer. It was dismissed as being "broken". I aksed if I could have it so I could tinker with it. My boss gave it to me. I tried about a dozen different power cords with the same disappointing result. Now that Navigon is Navi-GONE from North America, they were of no help in trying to get another factory power cord.

So, I headed off to the local Radio Shack and explained my issue to a salesperson who also owns a Navigon. He quickly grabbed a Radio Shack "Universal GPS Car Charger". It is a standard cigarette lighter plug that comes with five interchangeable tips (3 different angles of USB 2.0 tips and 2 different sized round tips). He opened it up and plugged it into his tester. He turned on the Navigon and plugged it in. Bingo! $22.99 later and I had a fully functional Navigon 7100.

The Radio Shack model number of the charger is 20-151. I hope this helps!

Apparantly a standard mini-usb car chargers are not compatible with Navigon. I had same problem. Do a search on ebay for "navigon car charger". Read through the descriptions and some will say "guaranteed to not go into PC sync" or something like that. You can get one for $10 or so.

My Navigon 2100 was also showing the computer connection when plugged into 12V car outlet. I purchased a new Garmin 255W and tried that 12V connection and it worked fine on the 2100.
I purchased another OEM 12V Garmin 255W plug on e-bay for $16 and it works great on the Navigon 2100.
Now I have a GPS for each car.

This site led me to a solution. I had several car and 110 ac chargers. By trial and error i found the car charger that works. ( I assume it came with the GPS)
The strange part is the charger has a fuse module and is rated 5 volts 1.2 amps out with a pin diagram showing pin 1 + and pin 5 - Part # 034112 made in PRC All my other chargers and the computer USB force the GPS to the computer device picture.

The problem is with the usb port on the navigon , if you look closely the inside part (plastic ) is bent up o down , needs port repalacment or cord fix to the unit with standard usb at the end.
