Once you change the drum unit on these machines you must reset the printer. Turn on the machine, open the front cover where the toner is located, press the "option" button on the keyboard. You should see a message on the display that gives you an option to press 1 or 2. Press 1 to change drum. Close the cover and you should be reset.

Same problem-
1st- take out drum & toner assembley- with open door - press OPTIONS - then #1 - reinsert
if continues
2nd - I sprayed canned air on the drum wire assemble (where our favorite 'blue' tab slides) the toner builds up; then I gentle wiped the drum in a horizontal direction while manually turning the drum several times.
I reinstalled and like new...
You need to run that blue tab back and forth about 20 times to clean the drum corona, use canned air and blow out the area below the blue tab on the drum, wipe the metal contacts on each side of the drum, and if all that fails, you do need a new drum.
With that error you need to remove the drum, run the little blue tab on top back and forth about 20 times, blow out the area below the blue tab, and re install and try printing again. If the error is drum life end you need to open the front door and press either menu or options, sometimes the clear/back button and tell it it's a new drum.
You run the little blue tab back and forth about 20 times, use a can of air to blow toner out of that area, if it doesn't help, you need to wipe the corona wire carefully with a q-tip. Also wipe the electrical contacts on the sides of the drum and inside the printer on the right and left sides where the drum sits. After all that press go 3 times for a printout and see if it is telling you the drum clean error, it will show the last 10 errors.
The drum is the piece that holds the toner cartridge. Once you remove it you'll see a pale blue tab at the rear of the drum unit. Slide it side to side a couple of times to clean debris from the drum area.
Reinstall the new drum unit, keeping the front cover open. Press OPTIONS. Press 1 when the display shows REPLACE DRUM? 1.YES 2.NO ACCEPTED. Close the front cover.
if it said "change drum soon", actually you can ignore this message.
you can still print and printer still working with no much problem.
or you can reset the LCD.
Open the front cover and take out the toner/drum unit. On the top of the drum unit you will see a blut tab that you can slide side to side. Do this 10+ times and this should fix your issue. Make sure to put the blue tab back in the original start position which is believe is to the left on that model.
This seems to happen some of the time. Brother has an FAQ for this:
1. Verify the toner cartridge is installed correctly by following the steps listed below:
a. Open the front cover.
b. Lift the drum unit slightly and pull it out. Place the drum unit on adrop cloth or large piece of disposable paper to avoid spilling and scattering the toner.
c. Remove the toner cartridge from the drum by holding down the lock lever (blue tab) on the left side of the drum unit and lift the toner out. *Handle the toner cartridge carefully. If toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immediately wash it off with cold water.
d. Gently rock the toner cartridge from side to side five or six times to distribute the toner evenly inside the cartridge.
e. Place the toner cartridge into the drum (be sure it clicks into place).
f. Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue tab on the top of the cartridge from right to left several times. Return the blue tab to the home position before reinstalling the drum unit assembly.
g. Reseat the drum unit into the machine.
h. Close the front cover.
2. If the message "Toner Life End" continues to appear on the display, contact Brother Customer Service at 1-877-Brother (276-8437) Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm EST, excluding holidays.
