When I try to change password I get a message stating that this feature is inactive.

Dear customer..here is the solution
Sometimes when you put a new (or alternate) voicemail system on a Norstar switch, The feature codes that accessed the old system stay in the KSU memory. If this is the case all of your feature codes will appear inactive even if the voicemail system is operating correctly.
To fix this issue you need to run an External Feature test (XFtest) to identify and remove the leftover codes from your KSU memory. You must have a programming set to access this menu (M7310, M7324, T7316).
Power down the Voicemail unit. Remove connection to voicemail ports from KSU.
1. Press [Feature] **938378 (XFtest). The password will be 266344 (Config).
2. Your display will read Feat code: and you will have options First and Exit.
3. Press First. The first stored feature code will appear, and you will have options Test, Back, and Next.
4. Press Test. Your options will read Remove and OK. Press Remove.
5. Once the feature code is removed, press Next to go to the next code.
6. Do this with all codes until your display reads None Registered
7. Release
Restore connections to the voicemail ports from the KSU. Power the system back up.
The feature codes will be restored to the correct defaults with the completion of the voicemail power-up cycle.
thank u
SOURCE: No matter what Feature 983, 984, 985, 903, 904,
Sounds like the voice mails down. try resetting the power to it and hopfully it'll respond
SOURCE: I have tried feature 981, 982, 983 etc. and I get
First make sure u r using Voicemail system which is either Star talk or call pilot.
If u r any one of this then only u can use F 981, 982 , 983 or 985. Its a feature code of voice mail.
If u r using either of this and still gettin inactive feature, then try with rebooting The Satr talk or call pilot i.e. switch off from mains wait for few mins and switch it back on.
After rebooting it will take 15-20 mins to boot up the system and after that u can use these feature.
Thanks.
Abhi

Sounds like the voicemail system is locked up and needs to be powered down and powered back up.
The voicemail, if it is a Call Pilot looks like a small gray box which looks like this in the photo:

You can unplug this unit for about 15 seconds, then plug it back in...
It will take about 5 minutes for the Call Pilot to re-boot, then you can dial FEATURE 9 8 3 to ensure that it has come back up.
Good Luck!
