How do you check a heater element in a dishwasher

please confirm if the heater element looks like the one on this diagram

Is your model operating on 240v AC.
Generally to test heater it is better to check for ohms. If the dishwasher is now working then please clarify why you need to check voltage on heater.

Take off the front bottom panel and then the next cover plate inside that one. You will have to cut one of the plastic extensions to a foot to do that if you cannot take the dishwasher out otherwise pull it out and turn it on its side.The heater looks like this

Check the heater element by disconnecting the leads to it and test with a multimeter whether you have an open circuit.My water was not heating but the heater element was OK I had to replace the control panel for $175 AU as that was the problem as the relay to the heater element was not working.

You need to take the bottom front off the heater, UNPLUG dishwassher first. There will be two wires going to the heater element, Unplug one wire and check the element with a OHM meter to see if the element is bad. If you don't get a reading the element is bad write down the make and model number you can order this part from sears or a local appliance repair parts store.

Check the element by using an Ohm meter. You should get an ohm reading if the element is OK. If the element is open circuit you would get an infinity reading. Just note that "newer" machines do not use the traditional heating elements but do have a (Inductive heater) coupled in line with the hose feeding the top spray arm of the washer. This unit must be cheched by a dealer as a DIY will have dificullty checking it.

Does sound like the element is bad, confirm with a multimeter, should see 120v across the element terminals, if voltage is present check for continuity of the heating element with the power off, no continuity equals bad element.

Look inside the dishwasher to see where the heating element terminals are. If they are in front you might be able to change it but if the element is in back, you will need to have the dishwasher pulled out to install the element.
