They can typically run 200 to 275. Most folks just buy a new one.
I've had many customers with broken tops. Everyone, without fail chose to replace the unit instead of repair due to cost of parts alone. The question is, do you really want to?
Have you chacked prices of the top?

There are 3 or 4 screws under the front lip; then the unit hinges upward. Turn off the power first! Once opened you can safaly remove the burners and replace toe top. hope this helps!

It looks as if you need to remove the whole cook top to replace the glass top, incidently that is a 400 dollar item, so you have to take care. See: http://www.partselect.com/PartDetail.aspx?Inventory=2341162&SourceCode=5&ModelNum=jed8430#RepairStory
Yes you can. Call Jenn Air ((877) 232-6771) and give them your model number (serial is helpful too). They sent my replacement glass within a week. I have a model JED8430ABD from 2000 and they had the top. Fit perfectly and took about an hour to replace.
To change it out, after unplugging the cooktop, I removed the metal tape connecting the external vent shaft to the blower. Then I just lifted the entire cooktop out up out of the countertop so I could access the screws on the sides of the cooktop (looking at the edges of the new cooktop glass helped me figure out which screws to remove around the edge). Then I removed the 2 screws in the vent area on top (1 black screw on each side). And that released the cooktop glass from the metal box that holds the burners. I then took the rubber rings out of the knob holes so I could put them in the new cooktop (I almost missed that...). Finally, I put the new cooktop glass on, put the screws back in, lowered the cooktop back into the counter, and retaped the blower to the vent shaft. Voila!
I really wouldn't be afraid of doing this yourself if you are handy at all. And it will save you a ton. Good luck.
PS The screws around the perimeter are hexigon shapped, so you can't just use a screwdriver. I found my Black & Decker electric screwdriver had that same shaped hole that it held the bit, so I just pulled out the bit and used the screwdriver that way. Worked like a charm.
you CAN use the skillet, but not with great results id assume, it holds too much heat, and problaby a bit too rough underneath and would probably scratch the glass top, in a family business for over 20 yrs. now and thats my recomendation, my brother also in the same feild swears his wife uses it with no issues!!!
the glass top replacemnt is a pretty straightfoward task, a matter of unscrewing one and repalcing it wiht anew one. after ordering new top its a matter of lookin g at eh new top to see which screws would need to be removed from old. hardest part about job will be youll need to do disconnect the downdraft from the venting ,and pull unit up from the counter inwhich it is installe.< not difficult but cumbersome and awkward to manuver. check abd verify full model and serail number and cal manufacture for correct part umber. may cast anywhere fom 200-400 dollars depending on model
I have the radiant cooktop (i.e., glass top) version of this range. I've had this same problem since I first purchased this unit. I wondered why no one answered this question, as I check back to see from time to time. I finally contacted Jenn-Air's online support. My conversation was as follows (I'm not entirely sure that the tech support knew what she was talking about, but here you go anyway):
Cidalia C: Hi, my name is Cidalia C. How may I help you? You: Hello! You: I have a question regarding my "Downdraft Radiant Cooktop" Cidalia C: Thank you for contacting Jenn-Air today with your inquiry. What is your question please? You: None of my burners can simmer-- no matter what the setting, they will boil water! You: Is there an adjustment that can be made to attenuate the heat? Cidalia C: What is the model number of your cook top please You: JED8430ADB Cidalia C:
Thank you. In looking at your burner configuration, the smallest
wattage on your unit is 1200. And, unfortunately, there is no way to
get a small wattage for your burners. We apologize for the
inconvenience. You: Yes, but the dials are supposed to prevent the full 1200 watts from reaching the burner unless it's on maximum heat, correct? Cidalia C: Yes, but the burners do not get low enough to be considered simmer burners. Cidalia C: Did you have any other questions or concerns today? You: I suppose not. Cidalia C: Thank you for contacting Jenn-Air. Have a good day!
The cook top is attached to the wood frame by brackets, just remove the screws and the electric connection, make sure the power is off from the main box, it's a 220 volt wiring and then just lift the top off. to remove the glass, look around the edges and you should see some small screws, just remove them and the glass should lift off.

Found the solution. It was a simple one duh! Six screws. After looking at the picture of the glass and realizing that the glass comes on a frame, I noticed the screws just below the glass on the cartridge. The glass frame sits inside the base of the cartridge. It took about 5 minutes. mmaque
