Adaptec 6405 Anyone know what size threads the holes in the heatsink on this SAS RAID controller are? They are very small, perhaps 2/56 size, but could also be something metric. I have a small fan that fits precisely ocer these holes, but Adaptec provides no info on them in their docs. Thanks. Dave

The drive is too big for the BIOS to recognize.
2 options:
A bios update from the board maker
Use smaller drives.

If you are planning a RAID many RAID controllers have size limits as well.

Reformat and recreate new arrays....cheers..hope you had backups.

Most likely, yes. It can take several hours to rebuild depending on the size of your drives.

You can install Adaptec Storage Manager (assuming you're using an adaptec controller) to see what it's doing (and send you alerts on a drive failure).

If you have another brand controller, they should have some similar software to view the status of the RAID.

Did you make sure that your hard drive has been made into a "dynamic volume" instead to the usual "simple volume"? It has to be "dynamic" before your can put it into a RAID configuration. You will have to use your RAID Controller to create a dynamic volume or to make the hard drive part of a dynamic volume.

I'm thinking you should be checking the drives. If one of them is failing, you will get parity errors.

That particular work station comes with both IDE and SCSI drive interface controllers. The IDE drive should be used for your OS. The SCSI drives for your data storage. Now, the issue is to get the SCSI to work in RAID_0 as I understand.

You iwll need a RAID controller such as Adaptec AHA-3940AU WD SCSI Host Controller, which may be found on eBay (used) for a very affordable price. The driver software may be downloaded directly from Adaptec, so I suggest you do that in the iterim peroid, and store drivers on a USB thumb drive.

Besides standard beeps codes indicating Processor, CPU, Memory or Systemboard failures,
Dell PERC (PowerEdge Expandable Raid Controller) or SAS Controllers (Serial Attached SCSI) generate beeps to alert failures on the RAID sub-system.

From your description of the issues (when the beeps start), i suggest you check PERC or SAS setup. If you have Dell OpenManage Server Administrator installed, you can log-in and check for more information. Additionally, on the next reboot check the PERC/SAS/CERC boot up for any messages. You may also access the PERC (Ctrl+M), SAS (Ctrl+R) CERC (Ctrl+A) Management Menu for specific failures and attempt a rebuild (assuming you have a redundant RAID Volume).

You can also speak with Dell Support and raise a warranty call if the system has warranty.

Note: PowerEdge 840 would ship with PERC or SAS Controller. PowerEdge 700 will ship with PERC or CERC.
