Recently acquired SZ 736 that was in storage for about a year. Unit worked before put in storage. Both compressors seem to be running, but getting hot (about 170 F, measured with a non contact thermometer) Condenser fan not running. Freezer and refer temps get to about 50F in a 70F room. Freezer only a few degrees cooler than refer. How do I access condenser fan to work on it?

You will need to remove the cover around the condenser fan motor then remove the screws holding it down to the base. Remove the wiring from the junction box and away you go. Do not run the unit without a working condenser fan motor, you run the chance of causing yourself many other problems. With a new fan motor the unit should run fine unless there is waxing in the cap tube from overheating. Good luck

Bad compressor. Anytime a compressor on anything gets to hot to touch that is a sign that the piston is applying to much pressure to work which in return causes the compressor to go bad if not caught right awya

You may be able to just lubricate your condenser fan. There is a lubricant called "Zoom Spout" that is a paraffin based oil that you should use to do the lubrication. The oil is available at most appliance parts sources and usually at the Sears parts service counter. It is less than $3.00. You need to oil then wipe the armature shaft clean by gently tugging on the fan to lift it and wipe again and then re-oil the shaft front and rear of the condenser fan motor. The fan bearings get dirty and cause the fan to run slow. Any other type of oil will work for 30 days or less and then it will start running slow again. Just use the correct lubricating oil the first time and save yourself some money and time in the future.

Some of the condenser fan motors you can remove the bearing mounting hardware and slide the bearing up on the fan motor shaft to allow for cleaning the gunk off of the shaft that is causing the bearing drag. If you do take it apart note the bearing mount positions BEFORE you take them apart. I usually scribe one side of each bearing mount in a different place so that you do not install them backward.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Remember (Zoom-Spout oiler and there is a tube that pulls out of the oiler for use. Do not pull it out all the way!)

SOURCE: sub zero 532. freezer works fine --0 degrees.

check the fan that runs between the freezer and the fridge --check fan for ice blockage -debris-or damage / clean or clear blockage --if not running test wiring and connections as well as motor /repair or replace //also check fan damper is not frozen or blocked its flap that opens and closes for air to flow //----ur fridge side is cooled from the the freezer side the cold air is blown in from the freezer if fan or damper is not working correctly than fridge is usually warm and freezer is working properly

I have sub zero 245 RFD model. It was working great and almost overnight it stopped getting cold. Is there anything I can do before calling for service? Thanks

Hi,
Have you checked the condenser to see if its clogged, or the condenser fan motor to see if its running. Is the compressor running? If not, you may need to by-pass the cold control to see if the problem is there. This older unit has a single compressor, so if the condenser fan is not running, the compressor can over heat and shut down. If the condenser is clogged same thing. If the light switch at the bottom of the door fails, the light will over power the cooling ability too. All of these things can cause the unit to fail. This unit is close to 30 years old. You made want to rethink a major repair at this point. With out seeing the unit, this would be the places I would be looking for answers.

Is it normal for warm air to blow out of the fan at the top of a side by side sub zero. Its over 20 years old and we recently had the compressor replaced on the freezer side.

warm air will blow out from the condenser fan which is in the same area as the compressor.
There should be no warm air inside the freezer of fridge.

Clean the condenser located under the unit. This may help. However, more serious problems involve refrigeration leaks shorted thermistors and non running fan motors. All are common. I recommend an authorized Subzero tech for this unit if cleaning the condenser does not help.

Sub zero

This means that your unit is unable to dissapate the heat where it is intended to, the condenser unit. Open the top panel and check the condenser unit to see if it is clogged with debris. It will be on the rh side and looks similar to a car radiator. If it is dirty, clean it. Also, check to see if the fan is running that blows through the condenser. It should be running whenever the compressor motors are. If it is not blowing, replace it.

My sub-zero frig is running hot on perimeter strip

Usually, this either means that you have a dirty condenser unit or a faulty condenser fan motor. Check behind the top acess panel to the right and see if your condenser is clogged with dust. Also, check that the fan motor up there is going whenever the compressors are running.
