Juki DDL-227 won't spin

I have a Juki DDL-227 and it was recently moved to my house. Before it was moved it worked fine. Now when I press the foot pedal the piece that turns the belt will spin, but it won't catch and turn the belt that connects from the motor to the sewing machine. The hand wheel doesnt move at all. Do I need some oil? Is it a special type of motor oil? Any ideas on what's wrong? This is for a project I need to finish today.

:) welcome to the world of industrial machines. The good news is they are typically simple machines.

It is a good habit to take a few minutes to clean and oil your machine before you start sewing. Look for the oil points and give it one drop of quality sewing machine oil in each port.

Now let's try to determine why the hand wheel isn't turning. Loosen and remove the belt from the large reducer wheel under the table to the sewing machine. Try to turn the hand wheel. If it does turn.... Good! If it doesn't turn... we know the problem is in the the machine head and not the wheels below.

Make sure there is no bobbin thread or upper thread. Try to turn the hand wheel again. Anything?

Look carefully at the machine... is the take up lever bent? (personally had this happen with friends helped me move a big machine like this.)

Keep working this way... inspecting the machine until you find the problem. Good luck

SOURCE: Juki Sewing machine DDL-555. After 4-5 hours use feed not moving

Sounds like as the machine builds up friction from extended use, some vital part is lacking lubrication and is seizing up. A good service person will remove ALL of the covers and thoroughly air clean and oil every moving part. Sometimes these dry points are hard to find and patience is required.

You can get a sewing machine oiler with a long applicator and put a drop of oil on anything that moves, but over oiling can be messy.

SOURCE: Toyota 2260 sewing machine. When I press the foot

Chances are you have a small piece of thread stuck in the raceway, turn the balance wheel bac kwards and you may free it off otherwise take out the bobbin and bobbin case and the raceway if you have the type with a drop down gate and clear it.

SOURCE: Hi I have a Babylock

So you can turn the wheel manually but the same wheel that turns manually does not turn with the foot pedal. But when you press the foot pedal you hear the motor engage and move / rotate? If so then the motor assembly has a problem on your sewing machine...

Please confirm the scenario I wrote here is in fact what is going on with your machine.

Just reply to my answer here and I can help.

Thanks,
Tim

I presume that you have checked that the clutch to wind bobbins is reengaged?? It is easy to forget sometimes. If your machine has a knob inside the flywheel to do this, then just check that it is fully tighted back up to reenage the motor drive.

Otherwise it may just be the drive belt has worn/broke/is slipping internally. I wouldn't dump it just yet, it may well be repairable.

The motor belt is available here http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/motor-belt-singer-007156xxl5.aspx so if parts are on the market then it may well be worth taking it to a repair shop and getting a quote to fix it. Depends on how long you've had the machine and what you paid for it and the cost to repair vs buying a new one.

If you or someone you know is technical, they may want to have a go at opening up the case and seeing what is happening around the drive/flywheel area - just make sure everything is disconnected from the power first.

Here is a threading diagram for this industrial machine
http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Juki_Sewing_machine_threading/Juki_552_553_555_227_Threading_Diagram.htm

You can also buy a manual here
http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Manuals/Juki_Manuals/Juki_Industrial_Sewing_Machine_Manuals/227-552-553-555_Instruction_Manual.htm for this model.

I would have thought there would be some sort of screw or adjustment to control stitch length but I can't find an image for your model.
However this image might help, http://www.johnharbsew.com/images/threading/JUKI-DNU-241-TD.jpg, my Singer 20U, has a dial like this with numbers on that you adjust for length, is there something similar on the Juki?
