I have used my new Eureka Altima Upright Vac a maximum of 20 times and had to change the belt TWICE already. But not just the belt... the beater bar breaks off of the plastic knob that holds it in place, so I have already spent over $60 to fix an $80 vacuum.
Also, I have to reach up inside to clean out clogs every time I empty the dirt from the cup.I have used my new Eureka Altima Upright Vac a maximum of 20 times and had to change the belt TWICE already. Turn the vac over so the brush is facing up.. There is a cover plate that surrounds the brush.. Take the screws out and remove the cover plate.. Pull up on the side of the brush that the belt is on.. Replace the belt.. The belt goes around the metal shaft and the brush.. Push the brush back in place.. It might be a bit tough going in because the belt causes some tension.. Put the cover plate and screws back in..
With the vacuum flattened (straightened) out, turn it over and remove the back roller cover, (2 screws) once off, the roller should just pop out on the opposite side (opposite from the belt). Don't forget to turn the roller to center the belt once you have it on.
If you've put a new belt on and you still are getting a rubber smell, then odds are that your agitator (the rotating brush) is not turning freely, and that means either (a) you need to remove the end caps and remove any hair / debris that is under those end caps, or (2) the bearing(s) of the agitator are bad. Depending on the model of the Sharp (which was not provided), you may be able to order just the defective bearings and replace them (or take the agitator to a vacuum shop to have them do it), or you can (or may need to) order the agitator assembly complete.
make sure all your filters are clean, try to turn the brush roller by hand a few times if it turns real freely then the belt is broke.if it is reall hard to turn then you have something wrapped around the ends of the roller where the bearings are.your motor guard might be keeping it from running because it got too hot take the brush roller out and the belt let it cool down for 20 minutes then try it without the roller and belt.you should be able to take the ends of the roller off by just pulling out on them so you can remove what ever is in there
You can download the manual here and it will tell you how to replace your belt. I could tell you, but I won't have diagrams which the manual does. Let me know if you require more assistance.
