You need to make sure that your laptop and IP phone are on the same network subnet. For instance, if you IP phone's IP address is 192.168.2.24 than your laptop must be on the same network addressing scheme, such as 192.168.2.23.

SOURCE: IP 7920 & Asterisk

I believe I saw somewhere that the 7920 works best with the 4.02 version of firmware... only hitch is you can't get it unless you have a valid Cisco login with access to their voice stuff. You could see if your local partner could get it for you otherwise. Also, I think you need the cradle to upgrade the phone manually - otherwise you need a TFTP server set up and the proper keywords in the cnf.xml file. There is better info on voip-info.org about these sccp phones - god I wish they (Cisco) would release a SIP firmware for these things!

SOURCE: Converting Cisco 7940 IP Phone to SIP

Unlocking a Cisco 7940

Method 1:
1) Unplug the phone
2) Plug the phone back in while holding the # key
The phone will soon display “Reset key sequence detected”
3) After several lights flash press the following keys in order:
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 #
4) The phone will then ask you if you want to save the network configurations:
Save network cfg? 1=yes 2=no
5) The phone will soon display “Factory reset initiated” and will continue
through the boot up process.
If that process fails to work for some reason there
is a second method.

Method 2

Complete these steps:

  1. Press Settings.
  2. The Network Configuration lock symbol must be unlocked. If not, exit to the main window and press ** # again.
  3. Press 3 on the keypad (or scroll down) for Network Configuration.
  4. Press 33 on the keypad (or scroll down) to Erase Configuration.
  5. Press the Yes softkey.
  6. Press the Save softkey.
The phone will now be reset.

You are very close to fixing your problem. You will need the correct firmware and files; these are proprietary but you should be able to acquire them from your certified reseller. Alternatively, here at IdacomUSA, we have the proper firmware on hand, and can flash the phone for you to get it back to life. Call us at 1-800-903-9190 or visit us at http://idacomusa.com

I cant test my 7941g because i keep getting a small bullseye on the bottom left corner of the screen

Your phone is trying to connect to a TFTP server address to download a firmware and/or config file update. You need to figure out what IP address it is trying to connect to (You may have to use wireshark or another packet sniffer to determine this).

Once you know the IP it is trying to connect to, you'll need to set up a small network with a TFTP server running on that same address, and feed the phone a firmware update and/or config file. It will likely not fully boot unless it gets a firmware update.

I keep losing internet connection to my PC, so I have to reboot several times a day. My laptop, printer and Nook work fine.

Try reflashing the router, the firmware is available here: http://homedownloads.cisco.com/downloads/firmware/WRT400N_1.0.02_Build_11.bin
If that does not correct the issue, try physically moving the router away from any sources of heat, as that can also cause the issue.

try to update the Firmware of the router. You can do this by opening the Cisco Connect Software under all programs. It should ask for an update when it initializes, if not then power cycle your network.

I can only connect one laptop to the internet. When i turn on the second one it makes the first laptop loose its connection with the internet. My service provider says its the router. Can u help?

Hi! I think you have an IP conflict on your laptops. Do this: goto control panel and open the network section and put a fixed IP address for both the laptops, lats say: LapTop1: IP: 192.168.0.10 LapTop2: IP: 192.168.0.20
And put a DNS number in the same section where you put the IP numbers. The DNS number is the IP number of your router. WARNING! your router IP address must be in the same region as your laptops. Lats say Router IP: 192.168.0.1 than your DNS address on your laptops are 192.168.0.1.
Check in the router of some security restriction like how many users can be connected through WiFi connection, check for firewall enabled or disabled, if enabled try disable it and try to connect now.
I hope this solution will help to solve your problem.

Every time I try to establish a VPN through this router with my work laptop, the internet connection will hang for a couple moments, and then the connection from the router to all devices connected to it...

Base from the description of your problem this issue has something to do with the firmware of your router, so to correct the problem do a firmware upgrade on your router or if there's no updated firmware you just flash the firmware to it then check if the problem is already fix after doing that.
