Windows XP will be supported to April 2014, if you have the early addition you will need to download service pack 2 and 3 to get the updates. The laptop does not have sufficient ram to support windows 7 and some device drivers may not be supported.

SOURCE: just re installed windows xp on new hard drive, built-in speakers no longer functioning

Visit support.dell.com, click on drivers and downloads, and then click on the service tag option.... enter the service tag from the bottom side of the laptop... it will then display the list of drivers for that laptop.

Download and install the audio drivers and any other ones that you need.... let me know if that solves it for you. Make sure they are for your laptop model and operating system.

SOURCE: how to replace the hard drive

first lets get the basics out of the way, did you buy a 2.5" laptop harddrive? Good if you did.

Unplug your laptop, turn it over, remove the battery, find the harddrive cover.

In most dells its on the side
example: http://www.buildorbuy.net/images/laptop_pics/3remove_screws.jpg

if its on the side like that, remove the screws and in most laptops you have to pull it up to unlock it, now pull it out. some laptops might have a simple pull it out system, you didnt say witch one you have so i cant be sure.

If the hdd is not on the side then its on the bottom
example: http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/ToshibaM205/dismantle/big/Toshiba-Portege-M205-02.jpg

you need to remove the old harddrive from the slot, remove the hdd cradle.

install the new harddrive in the cradle plug it in. put the screws back on.

Your done.

SOURCE: error code 0146

Alot of times when Dell replaces a hard drive, its usually one thats been refurbished and NOT brand new. Since you have been definitely been having issues with more then one of there hard drives, defiinitely call them back and have them walk you thru all the steps to verify and the once they verify it tell them because you have had lots of problems with hard drives in that unit to please make sure to ask that a BRAND NEW one is installed instead of a REFURBISHED one.

Hopefully they will do this seeing as how there has been lots of problems. Hope this info helps.

Have you tried resetting the BIOS defaults? In doing so, it will force IDE re-detection and often resolve vague boot issues.

I formatted a dimension 8100 and I install window 7 32 bits now I can't upgrade my Ethernet or sound drivers

I suspect you already tried the drivers. Dell site only has drivers from 2001. You may have to roll back or purchase new cards. It's the same reason I can't use Win8.

Windows 7 can't access hard drive running Windows XP

The most common reason is that the physical hard drives are not "Pinned" correctly. If you did not move a jumper pin or know what I am talking about, then this probably applies to you. If you would like instuctions let me know!

I can't recover my microsoft word program after upgrading to Windows 7 from XP, can you help?

When you installed Windows 7 as your O/S, you had to format your Hard drive.

If you saved XP it will be in Partion A or B on your hard drive.

But it will only be there if you saved it when installing WIN7.

Go to Start, Computer, and select drive C (usualy) there you will find your XP programmes.

GOOD LUCK.......

I am working on a emachine desktop that had windows xp on it, I am trying to install windows 7 ultimate on it, after formatting the hard drive and setting up a partition, It installs about 81 percent then...

Your computer -may- be out of date. The visual hardware need to run windows 7 must be up to date, and not made before 2003. Depending on how old your computer is, Windows 7 may or may not run on it. It may also just as well be a problem with your monitor. Is your monitor very old?

My hitachi hard drive dosent show up in my computer

The reason it's not showing up in XP is because microsoft made updates to drive handling in Windows 7.

The disk is in essence too "advanced for XP"

Your best solution is to copy the data off the drive onto the windows 7 machine, then format the drive using windows XP. Once formatted, copy your files back onto the drive from the windows 7 computer and both will be able to share the drive.

Hope this helps FixYa,
