I'm not that blonde, but I can't figure out how to light the oven on the old frigidaire I have. It doesn't have anything on the top, only one dial in the middle on the front of the range that says 'oven' on one side and 'temp' on the other. The dials for the burners have a 'lite' setting and they work just fine, but the oven dial just says 200 to 500 and then 'broil'. I had to bake cookies in my toaster oven yesterday - would like to use the oven today!! Thanks!
Sounds as though the pilot light in your oven went out. On the inside of the oven there should be a small hole about the size of a 50cent piece on the floor of the oven. Turn on the gas for the oven, light a matchstick or rolled up piece of paper, stick it into that hole and it should light, monitor the oven for 30 seconds to see if it starts to heat. SAFETY 1st!
Checking the oven's gas safety valve
pilotless safety valve
used with ignitor
Their are several different gas safety valves. On ovens with
ignitors, if the ignitor is weak then the oven will not light off, but
what if the igniter is new and the oven will not come on?
An easy way to know for sure if that safety is bad is to see if it
is open. If it has no continuity then the igniter is not going to come
on.
NOTE:Never put 120 volts to the safety valve in an attempt to make
it come on. All you will do is kill that ******. It has to be hooked in
line with the igniter to work properly. Why? The ignitor takes up most
of the power. The power goes through the safety valve as 120 volts but
because the amperage is all being hogged by the ignitor, the gas valve
opens up and allows gas to flow out into the burner and ignite. Unless
it is leaking most of the time the gas safety valve is NOT the problem.
On ovens with pilot lights or standing pilots most of the time it
IS the safety valve because the little thermocouple that mounts on the
pilot goes bad and won't open the safety valve.
valve with
thermocouple
Some ovens offer a seperate safety feature called a flame switch.
What it amounts to is the thermocouple mounted on the pilot light goes
to the flame switch which will have continuity as long as it is heated
by the pilot light.
It allows for the gas valve to let gas out as long as the pilot is lit.
flame switch
NOTE: If you do have to replace the gas valve remember this: It
will not come preset. You will have to adjust the flame height with a
wrench. It is a good idea to set the 2 valves side by side, adjust the
orifice height on the new valve to the same height as the old one and
then you need only to tweak it a tad. If the flame is too low it will
take 2 hours to bake a pie shell. too high and the bottom will be
cooked before the rest. It is best to adjust the flame to about half
way up the flame spreader.
The ignitor glows but the oven will not come on. Solution: Replace
the ignitor, even if it comes on. Why? Because 99% of the time the
ignitor is weak. When it is working fine it should be so bright you
cannot look at it for long. If it is a mellow orange color it is lighting an old Frigidaire gas oven - glowbar.jpgce it. The only way the gas oven valve
would be bad is if it is open and has no continuity.
oven ignitor
An ignitor must draw at least 3.5 amps or that safety valve will not open up and release the gas:

If you have a pilot light out you would smell gas in the oven from the lingering pilot gas. The pilot would be mounted on the burner and you would have to pull out the bottom drawer and lay on your back to light it.Open the bottom drawer and look for the burner. near the rear where it curves downward to the floor is the pilot assembly. I like to use a small propane torch to light pilots or a barbque stick lighter.

Hello friend, thank you for your post!
From what you are describing it sounds like a potential issue with your control or pressure regulator within your Frigidaire oven. I would recommend seeking assistance from a professional for further help regarding the oven not lighting due to the gas.
If you need assistance connecting with a professional technician you can visit the manufacture's website for further help. -Matt

There are two slats on the floor of the oven on either side. Yesterday I tried turning on the oven and stuck a lighter in the gap, but nothing happened. I just tried it again and still nothing. How long would I have to wait for it to light? I assume I'll see or hear it light? I don't feel like I should have to wait too long with a lighter in there!! Would I smell the gas?
