Evinrude outboard motor 15HP 1974 Model. Need a manual or diagram of the gearbox and how the gear shift seal is fitted/replaced. Also need a diagram of how the water pump is connected into the power head.
Thanks for your help. My gear case does not split in half. the gear shift shaft goes through a brass bush with a 'o'ring below it. The brass bush is pressed very tightly into the casing. Thanks for your help. My gear case does not split in half. the gear shift shaft goes through a brass bush with a 'o'ring below it. No stream of water discharging is usually caused by a worn out impeller. There is a pin , or keyway on the driveshaft. Sometimes the impeller will freeze or stick to the impeller housing and shear off if the motor has been sitting in storage for a long while. Remove your lower unit and driveshaft. The pump sits on top of the gear case with the driveshaft running through it. Drain your contaminated oil and pressurize the lower unit. Soap up the top and bottom end of the gear case and check for bubblesNo stream of water discharging is usually caused by a worn out impeller. There is a pin , or keyway on the driveshaft. Here is a website where a manual for you outboard may be purchased. Outboard Marine went out of buisness in 2000 and thus no parts of origial manufacture are support is available . Therir are secondary markets .
THe Lower case splits in half and their is a seal around the prop shiftm which is pressed in. The seal between the cases are cut o-rings which are placed and glued into place with gasket seal.
The water pump is located where the case splits a little bit higher. You must open the little port on the side and take out one of the screws to the connecting shift linkage to split the case. After splitting the case the drive shaft and water pickup tube(s) wil come out of the powwer head or the tubs may stick into the power head which is ok. Place the lower skag into a vice and remove the 4 or 5 screws to the water pump housing. Remove and replace impellor and impellor plate if available. If part(pieces) of the rubber impellor is missing flush out the tubes and the power head to remove them.
When reinstalling the lower unit use a flash light to make sure that the tubes return to the proper place in the power head and the shift lever is resecured.
If you need more assistance, just write back. I was an Outboard motor mechanic for five years about the time of your motor.

This is a 1974 6 hp motor. Regardless what its original oil mixture was. With current TCW3 oil mix it 50:1
this is 6 gal of gas and 1 pint of oil (16 oz.)
It is a two stroke
not sure if you can interchange the manual & aut shafts, but you should check to see if there is excessive play where the shaft enters the gear box if so the diff bearings my be worn, if there is no play or noises from gear box when driving, remove the shaft again an try the seal on the shaft to check it's a proper fit, before fitting seals it is a good idea to leave them soaking in oil for a few hours prior to fitting
sorry but its going to be a big job. you need to remove the gearbox to open up and get to the seals. you could try and use an additive in the gear box, its like oil seal for engine you can get it for engines gear boxes and difs and power steering. it sometimes goes by seek and seal, in older vehicles its quite good. you will need to replace the oil it will need to be done twice to clean it all out so it can get a good seal.. i.e change oil run engine get the gearbox to move for 20 min then change the oil as its warm not hot so let it cool down for 10-20 min then drain. put the seek and seal in and top up with oil and run as normal, check after a few days to see if its worked. usual does.
Your best bet is ebay for a replacement user manual. Take a look around, you will come across one... For the meantime, gas oil ratio should be 50 parts gas to 1 part oil, i.e. 50:1. General care: Dont go full throttle for any length of time. Cruise of 3/4 throttle... Always flush engine after use in saltwater, including washing down exterior. Keep spark plugs in good order and check prop for fishing line wrapped around in near the prop hub. Otherwise, get a yearly service and have them check the water pump and replace as needed, get it tuned etc and gearbox oil changed.
