Seems to go into reverse mode but won't go backwards. Jacked up the mower and looked under rear as wife moved into reverse and everything seemed to go into reverse but when on the ground running it wont go backward. Sometimes if I push off it then goes backward but not usually. Is there an adjustment that would cure this?
There is a adjustment at the pedal there is littler rings move some to the side of the pedal you step on if that doesn't help close the knob on top of the fuel tank and stand the mower up on the rear bars(that's what there for) remove the battery if you are going to leave it up move the shifter and make sure that it is sliding all the way over and change the rubber disc that rides on the flat metal disc

It is time to replace the driven wheel. When you flip the mower up on the back end (after closing the vent on the top of the fuel cap), the driven wheel is the disc that has rubber on the outer edge that rides on the silvery disc that comes off the end of the motor. The last time I bought one was about 7 years ago, at which time it cost me about $7.85. I would expect it to be around $11-12 these days.

check the connecting rod to the tranny. follow the gear handle and you should find a rod connecting the handle to the axle make sure you're in neutral and adjust the rod until the handle starts to move

Well you have a fault with the belt which goes from the engine to the transmission being too loose or the transmission itself has failed. Get underneath it and, with the engine cold and not running, grab hold of the belt and see if there is any slack in it. This would be the topmost belt, it should not have any slack in it unless the clutch pedal is pressed down. Don't try this with the engine running unless you have an extra set of fingers and a surgeon at hand. If the belt is good then your transmission has failed and you need another mower as the cost of the transmission will exceed the value of the mower. There are mower boneyards around and used trannys for sale on ebay, but most likely you will be looking for another mower.

Depending on which Craftsman riding mower you own, there are a number of problems that could cause the mower to no longer move:

Double check the belt routing. Drop the deck so you can get a view of everything and make sure the actuation pulley is actually engaging when you put it in gear. You'll also want to check the rear of the mower for a bypass switch. They started including a switch, it's more like a wire that activates a small lever, that allows you to move by putting it into neutral bypassing the transmission. If you don't have that switch then it is most likely the belt not routing correctly or the transmission. If it was working before you changed the belt then most likely the problem is the belt not being routed correctly.
