Vollume trouble Hello, I have an Onklyo TX-8211 FM Stereo/AM Receiver. A few weeks ago, it started to cut the sound when the volume got beyond a certain point. If the volume is not very low, the sound will cut out. The display flashes "PROTECT", as if it is trying to protect the speakers? It is very annoying. I can only listen to the stereo at very low volume. Thanks for any help! H.

Hi... try factory reset: while holding down VCR/DVR button ,press the ON/STANDBY button. "Clear" will appear on display ,and receiver will enter standby mode. :)

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

make sure that somehow the wires didn't get loose from the speakers in the back. Protect means that it's overloaded. Did you change the plus wires with minus wires maybe. Check to make sure all the wires are good.

Your tuner will be the limiting factor regarding sound. The Onkyo accepts any stereo analog input via RCA connectors, period.

Those "black/red spring loaded wire inputs" are speaker outputs and if you hook one of those to an innocent audio device's Line In connections you might kiss it all goodbye.

In reality the correct way to listen to radio or any music source for that matter is in 2 channel stereo. What this means is that the front left and right will play and also the subwoofer. If you absolutely want all your speakers to play while listening to fm, than press the Multi channel button and set it to direct, or any other sound field that you may desire.

This is a piece of **** receiver. Ive had the same problem since it was brand new.

Does the display show "tuned" or "FM Stereo"? This would normally indicate a good reception. The tuner has a signal level threshold and if the signal gets to week, the receiver mutes to prevent noise in the speakers. Swithing to mono make reception less intolerant. Does the problem also occur, when you switch to mono?

It's the Tape 2 button - unclick it.

sounds like the tape monitor may be turned on. First place to check anyways. If it is not the problem, I am happy to talk more about it with you and do some more diagnoses.
