I HAVE A BUNN COFFEE MAKER WITH A THERMOS TYPE CARAFE. THE COFFEE COMES OUT WEAK AND NOT AS HOT AS IT SHOULD BE.COULD IT BE A BAD HEATING ELEMENT?

  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2014

I have had this coffee maker for a very long time and last week it stopped heating the water.the thermastat is set and the heater coils are not limed up.I noticed that the (generally clear)sleeve on the thermal cut off is very dark colored.Could this be the problem?

Basing on personal experience (you can find more on Google probably), solutions are:

On percolated (filter) coffee machines:

Check water temp, if water temp is insufficient , most common is scale heating element , faulty element, faulty thermostat.
Check if water is dripping right at the center of the filter, if it is dripping on one side because the orifice is clogged, that can result in weak coffee.
Coffee blend not well distributed on filter basket.

On Espresso machines:

Check water temp, same as filter coffee machines (thermostat element, scale on heating chamber).
Ensure that coffee is filled correctly in the filter cup (fill at level), and well pressed.
Ensure that the coffee mixture that you are using is not too coarse, buy the apposite one for espresso.
Ensure that you are not leaving the machine brewing for a time that is too long, and Italian coffee cup is very small, approximately one regular shot.

On the hob moka pots (espresso, Moka and Bialetti type):

This are the trickiest ones, you need art and practice to get a good espresso with a Moka, but when you learn, the result is better than what you may get with an home electrical espresso maker.
The frame on the hob must be not too strong, and the mixture coarse but well pressed, with water at level tag, or you will get a weak coffee.
On Mokas a good strategy is keeping hob at minimum, and turning up the flame at top when coffee starts coming out.

French and turkish cafetieres:

Ensure that you put enough coffee, water hot enough, and that you left the infusion enough time to get a strong coffee.

Note: insufficient pressure and clogged lines on electric machines never give you a weak coffee, exactly the opposite.
Not pressed mixture always gives weak coffee, but too much pressed mixture may give you coffee with bad taste.

We just took our bunn machine back to the store and got a different one due to luke warm coffee. We checked the temp on the new on and found out that it too only had a temp of 73C !!! Could we possibly have two faulty machines?

My Bunn coffee maker is making weak coffee

Couple of ideas.

Your weak coffee could be due to the machine not getting hot enough, which is usually caused by calcium scale buildup on the heating element (the "burner").

Try descaling with a citric-acid based cleaner, such as Dezcal or Durgol.

The second is the coffee your using is a weak blend. Try changing to a different coffee and see if the strength is better.

I have the grind and brew thermal coffeemaker. The water does not get hot enough for steam to come off of the coffee when it is poured.

Hi, I have owned that coffee maker for years.
After it brews coffee, it does not have a warmer to keep it hot. It has a thermally insulated carafe. Such as regular lunchbox thermos jugs have. The reasoning behind this is that coffee heated after it is brewed spoils in a short time. (Of course, unheated coffee gets cold).
What that translates to for you with regard to no steam is this. As soon as the coffee maker finishes brewing your coffee, open the top of the carafe, stick in a spoon and stir it.Then pour it. (I learned the stirring part working in a restaurant).
If you have to wait before you drink it, do the same. Stir it first.
Hope this has been helpful
Love that grinder!
Best Regards,

My bunn thermofresh coffee pot will no longer keep the coffee hot. I always put hot water in the pot for up to five minutes to heat it up. This still doesnt help.

Is the coffee coming out hot enough? If you measure the coffee as it comes into the carafe, it should register at 175-185 degrees. If it doesn't, then it is a problem with the machine and needs to be replaced. If it is that temperature, then the carafe needs to be replaced. Please contact customer service with the model and date code located on the bottom of the machine. If the machine is 3 years or less it can be replaced at no cost. If over 3 years, it can be replaced at a reduced cost.

No manual with Bunn NHBX coffee maker.

before plugging in place your empty filter basket in the coffee maker and place a pot under it. Slowly pour in two pots of water using the pour pitcher. Now you can plug it in. it'll take 15 min to heat up first time . when you brew your first pot leave your water level a little short, because the water will expand (only the first time)

Cleaning the thermos on the BUNN single TF DBC

For the thermos you can use a small amount of purocaff and fill the thermos with hot water, let sit over night then rinse with cold water a few times to clean you can also use a soft brush to clean while the purocaff is in thermos. Clean around the showerhead with a clean towel, or you can use a filter with a little purocaff and brew into thermos and clean both in one shot.

Lid on carafe

Sadly, I have about 10 people who have this coffee maker. It is a wonderful little coffee maker and is very delicate.

the worst problem all the people here say is the lid leaks like a waterfall or it leaks by dripping non stop while pouring.

I had to call Bunn, who made this machine, and they have yet to figure out a solution to this problem other than having people who own this machine buy a whole new carafe with new seals.

You might try your local applianace repair store. Sometimes their engineers are smart guys who knows exactly what seals will work or where to get the parts you need better than the actual manufacter.
