Purchase or download a partition manager program.
Open or run the partition manager.
Pick a new size for the drive and decide what you want to do with the remaining space. The rest of the space should be partitioned or formatted to make use of it if the current partition is downsized.
Apply the changes by clicking "apply" or "OK." You will then have to reboot the computer for the changes to take effect. The program may automatically do this for you or it simply may direct you to do it.
The only way you can easily manage or change your partition size is to get a third-party program.
Partition Magic Freeware is the most widely known partition manager software. http://www.filehoo.com/download/Partition-Magic-8,0.aspx
You can also download freeware programs such as Cute Partition Manager. http://download.cnet.com/cute-partition-manager/3000-2094_4-10605516.html
In Partition Magic you can open the program easily. In Cute Partition Manager you may have to create a boot disk and boot from it to run the program. Once the program is open, select the drive you want to manage.
Go to the menu and choose an action or right-click and choose "resize." There will be an action -menu that will let you choose something like "resize" or "change hard drive size."
Some programs will also let you right-click on the graphical expression of a drive and choose the action or drag the graph to change the size.

For shansterbaby:
The first thing for the computer to find the drive is when it does the very first test on itself, at the POST. It detects all the components. You hear a bip. Then, you can see the result of the POST in the BIOS. If the HDrive is detected, you will find the st380011a in the list of the drive. Once you see the drive in the list, you're okay for the next step, to boot from Windows. Do you use Vista? or XP? For XP, I would open Windows Explorer and see under My Computer if you have another drive (D:, or E:). Click on it.
For meadomuffin, I had some problem with an Internal drive. I download for Seagate website a tool (it is called Seagate tool). I started a check disk from that tool, reformatted and it was then Okay to use it. Windows could detect it. Maybe that is not the answer for your problem. Let me know.

If your u8 has an operating system installed, yes, you can do that.
Be sure to boot the u8 in Safe Mode to copy your files.
I would also recommend checking the copied files for viruses before you use them.

i think you must place a jumper on the back side of the hdd.
If there isn't any jumper, it is a "slave".
When you place a jumper on the correct spot, the hard drive will become the master hdd. The position of the jumper can be found on the hdd itself.
Search for "master" and put the jumper there
